[E-Type] 4 speed gearbox " rumble when out of gear

In reply to a message from rlich8 sent Sun 29 Mar 2015:

I had my first decent run in the car today and was
overjoyed with the experience. The manual box REALLY wakes
the car up and the modern clutch feels just like a modern
production car. The reverse idler noise is more of a
nuisance than a problem and I will wait until I have
another good reason to pull the engine before I rebuild it.
By then I might be convinced to buy a 5 speed.

Dropping the engine and box was easy as I have a 4 post
lift and also built a cabinet on wheels to remove the
engine from underneath. Removing the gearbox might be
possible but the space to do so seems very limited.

I will probably buy a rebuild ‘‘kit’’ for the gearbox anyway
and keep it on the shelf

Hi,

Did you actually remove the gearbox without removing the
engine. Didn’t know it was possible, even with the 2+2.

Any tips, more info?

Many thanks,

Nice thing with the LWB chassis is that you can leave the
engine in situ, though the manual does not tell you this and
some purists scoff at the idea. SWB cars must pull bonnet
and engine.

I have a similar rattle/chatter in the gear box - mostly in
either first or second gear. Seems to be less in warmer
weather and my mechanic tells me is it two surfaces rubbing
against each other.

I feel the vibration when I touch the leather cover -
appreciate your thoughts/experience here - it is a
mechanical issue like you describe to fix it or do the
surface insulation first to see if that fixes it?

Thank you.–
