[E-Type] 4 speed to 5 speed GETRAG gearbox conversion

I want to put a 5 speed GETRAG gearbox in my 1962 E-TYPE.
What is involved (especially with the clutch bell)?
Can you use a BMW GETRAG gearbox - which model / year
If a new one is requested where in Europe
can I get it at the best price ( I live in France)
All your comments, stories, experiences will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Bernard;

You need an adapter plate, which used to be generally

available…I think SNG Barratt had them for a while. The tranny you want
is a 265 from a post 1987 M3, 1980-82 528i, 1985 535i, and probably a
couple of other years/models. Some BMW trannys have integral bell housings,
and can’t be used, so be sure to inspect the part before you buy.

Bernard,
have a look at:
http://www.classicargarage.com/common/pictures/mozes/bedrijf/e-type/preview/
e-type-rest-49kl.jpg
This picture shows the Getrag conversion from SNG Barrett.
It shows the adaptor plate between the standard clutch bell
(some minor modifications have to be made to facilitate room for bolt heads)
and the mechanism for gear change.
The drive shaft has to be shortened and an adaptor has to be welded.
You will find all details in their catalog, may be you can download the
catalog from their site.

Simply beautiful, what else can I say. Tell us about that line that goes
from the oil filter head to the transmission.
Keep us informed.

Look closer & I think you’ll find it’s the clutch flexible hose
that’s just hanging near the oil filter head!

Mike,
like Dean said: this is the flexible hose from the clutch slave cylinder!
It is nice to publish pictures on the list, the response is even better:
everybody likes to look at beautifull “jag” pictures!

In looking at the obvious work that the person has put into the
car as shown into the pictures, it seems to me that they are
making a great attempt at a detailed restoration. What always
stuns me as that they do this work and then end up with a car
that has to have a modified console and non jag shifter. Money
doesn’t seem to be an object here… at least it looks that way.
It is a great conversion for a normal driver since used boxes can
be obtained in Europe easy. If you’re not into a restoration,
then by all means start chopping. Notice that shifter supported
on that floating isolator… it leads to a very soggy shift feel
and wrong height and shifter position. Most people won’t admit
that they are not happy with the ratios as well as shift feel.
Take the time to find a converted car and drive one.
