[E-Type] 5-speed experience

I’m seriously considering dropping in one of the 5-speeds into my
1970 FHC. My engine is seriously tweaked, stage II ISKY cam and 3
carb set up…I’m putting out way too much torque at highway speeds
and would like to drop the revs. I already swapped in the rear end
from an XJ6, but that didn;t quite make the difference…anyone
have any experience with the 5-speeds?
Thnx–

What is the rear end ratio of the XJ6 gear set, and what exactly do
you mean by ‘‘putting out way too much torque’’ at highway speeds?
Torque isn’t usuallly the issue with regearing: Dropping the revs
simply saves fuel and wear and tear on an engine (especially an
engine with a 106 mm stroke!). Pascal Gademer has a V-12 with a
5Speed and perhaps he can speak to the efficiency gained. In my
experience with a 3.07 rear end, the need for a 5 speed isn’t
really there, so I cannot speak from need or experience. I just
thought you could elucidate for the forum to better enable you to
get an answer! Happy Jagging!–

If you often drive at highway speed the 5 speed is great. It lowers the RPM
reducing engine noise and wear while keeping quick acceleration off the
line. My 72 has the 3.31 rear end and will jump off the line failry quickly.
yet with the 5 speed, I only turn 3000 rpm at 90mph.

600 / 700 rpm may not seem like much on a short trip but after a few hours,
it adds up. also reduces fuel consumption by about 10 %…

I’ve had my JT5 for 4 years now, put about 40 to 45k on it, lots of track
miles, slalom, etc… and no problem. it has a solid track record with many
othes, JCNA pres. Gary Hagopian has had one for about the same time in his
62 FHC race/street car and does even more track miles than I do.

I also love the way the shifter feels, very precise. Mine is a bit shorter
too which makes it even better. Also the JT5 fits in without any mods to
the shell or tunnel unlike other altenatives.

Only downside of course is the cost, about $4500 altogether I think, check
www.5speed.com for exact cost. but if you drive a lot, it’s all worth it.

I’m running a JT5 5-speed with a 3:31 rear end and performance cams in
my '64 FHC and it’s great! What rear end ratio are you running? What
tire size are you running? What kind of perfromance under what driving
conditions are you looking for? The answers to these questions will
help you determine the gear set-up for the 5-Speed. In my case, I chose
a close ratio JT5 with a .9 5th gear. coupled with a 3:31 read end ratio
and 27in dia 600L x 15 Dunlop tires, I have lots of low end acceleration
with low rpms at hwy crusing speed.
