[E-Type] 61 FHC Questions

Hi Everyone,

I’m researching a car that I’ve found in a barn about 4 hours from me. I
haven’t been able to see it yet, and the owner is astonishingly technology
deficient. Anyway, it has been sitting for 20 years in a barn and now she
wants to clear the area. I’m trying to ask pointed questions to her about
the car, with a bit of success. Judging the condition of the floors or
lifting the hood seems to be well beyond her dependable abilities. I’ve got
friends in the area with digital cameras going to do a quick tour to see if
I should make the trip. The ownership states 1961 and she says it has a
“steel top”, which I am going to assume FHC (although one can hope). She
insists that is an automatic, but I didn’t think they made autos that early.
I tried to figure it out from the jag-lovers page, but I still haven’t been
able to pin it for sure. The price is right, but I’m trying to get a better
feel from her on the car condition before making the drive. I’m a bit of a
numbers-match-original kind of guy, so I won’t be too interested in
retrofitted car.

Was there a 61 automatic? Are they reasonable transmissions, I like the
manual experience myself, but there’s that ‘eating an ice-cream cone while
turning a corner’ dilemma to deal with. I’ve got friends in the area +with
digital cameras going to do a quick tour to see if I should make the trip.
I’ll keep you posted.

Two guesses:

  1. It’s had a V8 transplant at some point, if there is actually an
    autobox.
  2. More likely, to me: It’s a Mk. II or some similar saloon varient. I
think in '61 that could be a Mk. IX or a Mk. II.

Auto trans wasn’t introduced till the 2+2’s. Did you ask her whether it has
a rear seat? She may be wrong about the year, or perhaps the car was lumped
at some point. Be very very careful, but you probably already know that if
you’ve been reading the list for very long.
