[E-Type] '61 OTS

Hi Bob,

I was just thinking about that exchange last evening. It had to do
with the soft-top envelope hold-downs (the little posts behind the
seats), right? 875423 had 3 of them. Was that the question?

Just last night we loaded the rolling bodyshell onto a trailer.
Today I am taking the car to the same shop that did my '69 OTS for
the final blocking and painting. A little background… I had
sent the '61 to a well-known shop with an excellent reputation.
They stripped the car, found lots of dodgy metal and poor repairs
under the shiny red paint. They did do an excellent job of the
metal repair - no issue with the workmanship. But at this point I
have already spent a very large sum of money on the work, and I was
not excited about the estimated remaining cost for blocking and
painting. Five weeks of labor for blocking at their regular shop
rate, plus painting. It’s easy to do the math. (note to the list
members - this is not a thread about complaints - just the status
and direction of the project.)

So I now have a car that has great metal and lead work. The gaps
are excellent, body alignment seems spot on. The IRS is done, the
front suspension is shiny nickel-plated. I already have the engine
in concours condition in a crate. Btw, the car will be sprayed the
original color - Cotswold Blue. I have decided to not use the
Suffolk & Turley Dark Blue interior kit that came with the project -
too much blue goin’ on. That kit will go up for sale pretty soon.

The 4-post Rotary Lift arrives next week sometime.

Regards,

Hey David, I just happened to see your message and noticed that you
have a
different email address then what I have in my records. Thanks
again for the
pictures that you sent me several years ago as they helped to
answer some
questions. The big question is have you made much headway on the
car?

And when it does, could you spawn yet another thread telling
us what you do and don’t like about it? I’m back to looking
at 4-post lifts again after getting a mid-rise scissor lift
that won’t span far enough to hit the jackpoints on the
XJ-6… I’d been looking at the Rotary lifts before that.–

David,

I have 876160 Nov '61 and my front suspension is black not nickel
or cad plated. Are you doing this on a whim just because you fancy
it that colour? or do you believe it should be cad, zinc or nickel.

Hi Dave,

I didn’t choose it. The suspension is nickel plated because that’s
what that shop uses these days. I believe that the finish will
last a long time. It looks very shiny. I can live with it.

I had the control arms on my '69 OTS cad plated 4 years ago. It
looked great then, but it’s fading now, after only 4,000 miles.

Based on your post, I looked in Haddock (pg. 125 revised version.)
The factory interchanged black and cad control arms on the early
cars. I’m sure you already know that though.

Cheers,

David

Sure will. Actually, Tom Pope just put one up. He posted a photo
on the CJ site a few days ago. It seems up to the task, and since
we were down the learning curve already, I figured we could put
together this one in less time than the first one.

Hi Dave,

I have 876143, and mine has no trace of black on it. Best I can
tell, it was cad originally.

Hi David,
You have a good memory as the number of hold down studs was the
question. I’m afraid that survey got side tracked but will be picked up
again. You were also very helpful when I was trying to track how long the
black Lucar connections were used, Thanks!

Bill,

Although on the outside my car had been messed with a few times
from the original cream to various shades of red, maroon and
whatever else, all else seemed to be original.
My front suspension seemed to have the type of paint used by Jaguar
for this. It had never been off the car in my opinion.
My car seemed very original when I got it, original ali rad and
date tags on the master cylinder.
I see from xked your car was manufactured 4 days before mine.–
