[E-Type] '64 3.8L S1 Air Filter Qs

Hi -

I’m helping a friend with reinstalling an original style air
filter on his E-Type, which was missing on his car so I’m
trying to sort it out.

I figured out the bottom is supposed to bolt to the little
crossbrace under the filter, correct?

I note there are two holes on the side of the can, which I
think is supposed to attach to some sort of bracket. Can
anyone tell me where that bracket is supposed to attach to
the car?

Also, I assume the big black grommet on the top is supposed
to face up so the cone fits inside the round tube on the
underside of the carb intake, correct?

Thanks in Advance!!

Alan,

You are correct the can bolts onto the cross brace.
The bracket is bolted onto the short stiffener section that runs
along the top of the sill, there should be two holes with captive
nuts that will accept the bracket bolts.

Your last paragraph is also correct, the rubber grommet acts as a
flexible seal.

Alan,

There are a few poor glimpses into where the mount goes in here –
sorry there’s not a better shot.

The can was bolted to the crossbar on a stud that was part of the
canister in the 3.8 and other early SIs. You can just pad the top
of the bar with rubber appropriately and skip the nut on the
bottom, as it does no good and really makes things hard to get
apart later. Later cars had a hole in the bottom of the canister
and a screw was installed from inside, which is a bit better, but
still overkill.

As for the rubber grommet, the cone slips around the outside of the
round tube rather than inside.
