[E-Type] 69 2+2 wiring problem

Unfortunately, I didn’t take quite enough photos before I took this
car apart and the wiring diagrams are a little vague when it comes
to hooking up the ignition. As a result I am unsure of a few wires
that appear to go to the coil. The car has an Illuminition system
which I have hooked up according to the manufacturers
instructions. The car cranks over but will not start. Two of the
remaining wires are white with a black stripe, the other is all
white. I assume one of the w/b wires is the tach and should be
connected to the negative coil terminal. The white wire brings
power to the coil. Any guess as to where the other w/b wire goes?

Thanks, Glenn–

It goes to the distributor and the (-) terminal on the coil.
It is actually the same wire covered in the loom. The tach
gets its feed from the white wire.

I just got thru sorting this out on my car. Just wait till
you get into the dashboard!!–

Glenn,
According to the schematic (w/o luminition) the b/w wire is between the - terminal of the coil and distributor and there is a white wire going to the tach but there is also a white wire going to the + terminal of the coil.

Hi Glenn

Uncannily my 1969 2+2 was reimported to the UK for me from San
Diego! I’m in the process of converting to RHD for the UK as I’m
rebuilding the front end due to a cracked engine frame. While it’s
in bits I deicded to replace the wiring with a standard UK RHD
loom. Bloody nightmare! Mine also has lumenition so when I get to
the coil bit I’ll let you know how I get it going.

A tip I was given which is proving helpful is to remove the old
dash loom by cutting off all the ends and leaving them in place,
then simply replacing each one with the right colour one by one.
Nice theory.

The dashboard is very tricky as it all has to be in the right place
to shut the centre panel.

I have a question for you. Does your car have the starter solenoid
relay fitted? If so where is it on your car? Is it behind the left
hand inner dash panel or on the bulkhead (firewall) in the engine
bay?

Frankly I have bloody wires all over the place so I’m afraid I’m
not much help to you at the moment! But I’m getting there.

Mike,
in my 1969 2+2 (left hand drive) the starter solenoid relay is behind and
to the
right of the glove box.
That is the side where you are moving the steering wheel to.

Thanks Jim I think you may have sorted this out for me !!! If I
understand you correctly the 2 w/b wires that I have left are
really one wire that starts at the coil disappears into the loom
and then comes out again at the distributer. Fabulous !!
Therefore the Lumenition system replaces this wire and it is no
longer needed. Gotta love the internet.

Thanks again,

Glenn–

You must have the tach plugged in because the coil wire goes
through it. Or you can just short out the plug.
