[E-Type] 73 e-type backup light switch

I blow a fuse everytime I put the car in reverse so I am thinking I
have a short in the switch to the backup reverse lights.

My detailed v-12 workshop manual does not show the location of the
switch… Any help is appreciated.

If its like a series 1, and I have no idea if it is, the
switch is located on top of gearbox just north of the
shifter. Remove center console, tunnel cover, and all the
other stuff and there it is. There should be two wires
that lead from the switch inside the firewall and the to
the loom.–

Look at the side of the tranny, near the back.

Dear Pete,
If that advice sounds contradictory, then the first reply was for a
manual gearbox car and the second was for the rhs of the Borg
Warner autobox.

The switches themselves are usually quite robust and obviously
insulated from the gearbox casing. The short circuit could be
anywhere along the path between the switch and the reversing light
and the likely candidates are where there may be some
movement/chafing of the wires.

kind regards

If you’re blowing a fuse when you go into reverse your switch is
working perfectly. You have a short but its somewhere between the sw
and the back up lights.

Pete,
There is fairly flimsy insulation on the backs of my
original backup lights, and it may be compromised by damage
or wear. If you have continuity between both of the lighting
terminals even with the lamp off the car that would indicate
the ‘‘short’’. If you have two-terminal continuity to body
ground only with the lamp installed that tells you about a
short circuit in the wiring if not the switch. (You’ll
probably want to isolate each lamp and check only one lamp
circuit at a time.)
Sorry if that’s basic or misleading, but it’s where I’d
start with the S3 lights.
