[E-Type] A/C tension pulley substitute

My series 2 originally used the same pulley for A/C as used for
spring loaded jockey pulley. The problem is this pulley was not
able to withstand the forces exerted on it and did not hold up.
New Jag pulley ran about $130. and now XKs has one for $110.
A few years ago I found a pulley used for a lawn tractor for $7.00,
had to drill out bracket for a 3/8’’ bolt and worked great until the
other day when it was making a little noise. Well I guess I will
have to spend the big bucks, so I found a replacement at McMaster-
Carr #6234k43 for $8.25. Still uses the 3/8’’ bolt, works great and
is made in the USA.
Now that my pulley is replaced and Jerry M set me straight on ZDDP
I can sleep again.

I took my spare, worn-out pully bearing to a local bearing supply
house and was able to get a pair of bearings to substitute for the
original, and use a seperate bolt through them. All for less than
$15 total.–

I had also gone to a bearing supply but was told there was no
match. Then I gave it to my son at the time was taking a CNC
machine class in high school. It became a class project, they
butchered it.
I noticed that XKs is now selling replacement A/C vents, 5 for $200.

Tom,
“A seperate bolt”? I don’t follow. Can you explain or post a pic? Thanks,

In reply to a message from JOHN KOHLER sent Thu 22 Jan 2009:

I got a pair of 15/16 OD and 5/16 ID ball bearings and used them in
place of the original single bearing. I had to use a grade 8 bolt
for the pulley, as the original bearing had the all-in-one bearing
and bolt. I think the whole thing was less than $15. Be sure to use
a punch to stake the pulley after putting the bearings in so they
can’t back out, though I don’t think there is much tendency to do
so.–
