[E-Type] A Car Is Reborn

Saw a reference to this on a Stag list. Apparently a 4 part show on the
DiscoveryEurope channel covering the restoration of a 4.2 E-Type.
Any of you european listers see it/tape it?
Thon

Yes. Saw and taped.

I think there must have been some programs shown last week as the car was
well on the way to completion this week. The complete set of programs are
available on tape for 19.99 pds sterling. It gave a UK tel. no.

Paul,

I don't have the number right now but if no one else posts it before I get back in country I'll pass it on week after next. One thing though. It's possible that it will only be available in the European PAL format and thus will not be viewable in the US unless you have a multi-system VCR and TV. But there are a few VCRs out that will allow a copy from PAL to the US format. I'll let you know if I find the number and if I can find a US compatible tape.

Tel. no. 0117-954-9179

Have just rung the number and the only format they do is Euro PAL system.

Price confirmed as 19.99 UK pds including p&p, VAT etc.

FWIW, they do have a web page for this show:

http://www.discoveryeurope2.com/car/html/html/index.htm

A note on the video set though: it’s been edited down to two 90 minute
programs, and the site confirms that it is in PAL format.

Perhaps if we all email the discovery channel in the US, they would play the program here…

Subject: Program on Discovery Europe

The Discovery Europe channel has recently run a series called “A Car is
Reborn”, detailing the restoration of a Jaguar E-Type:

http://www.discoveryeurope2.com/car/html/html/index.htm

I know quite a few people (myself included) who would like to see this
program in the US, be it on Discovery or TLC. There is a videotape version
for sale from Discovery Europe, but it is a shortened version, and is only
available in PAL format, making it impossible to watch on most US equipment.

Do you currently have any plans to air this program on any of your US
channels? If not, would a sufficient number of requests for the show help
to get it included in a future schedule?

Thanks

I have just watched the last batch of these as they were transmitted last
night in UK. (I thought that I posted a note about this to the list when it
started but evidently didn’t - if you’re in the UK or get UK TV it is almost
certain to be repeated anyway). I taped all 15.

The series was a total of 15 half hour programs but less intros and adverts
is probably a total of 6 hours. Each episode had a few minutes on another
classic car and a few minutes with a race instructor testing a selection of
classic road/race cars around a very wet UK circuit (Knockhill, I think).
Both of these were quite nice drop ins to keep the general public interest
level up but would probably be excluded from the video. They probably came
to another hour and a half, so the total on the E was about 4 and a half to
5 hours.

This included choosing a type of car from a selection of classics which
appears to have been filmed after the restoration was complete, so it was
always going to be an E; buying a wreck; some nice interviews with Jaguar
people including Norman Dewis; being invited to the Jaguar 100 celebrations
after the restoration with a road test by Norman - who spends most of his
time with a full width grin on his face.

The car is a mid sixties Series 1 4.2 OTS which he chose based on the fact
that it had to be a Series 1 for him but that the 3.8 had uncomfortable
seats (!?) and a difficult gearbox (known as a theft deterrent to those of
us that have them). It had to be an OTS as well even though the fixed head
is a prettier car

If you know your car, there is very little that you would learn from this
and some of the statements seemed incorrect to me (without bothering to
check them). It’s a very light-hearted program which is enjoyable to watch
but has no real depth for anyone interested in serious restoration as there
is probably only three hours on the restoration itself (the strip down is
included and takes up an hour or so). He also has help from a complete set
of experts, who did the difficult parts such as most of the welding (yes it
was rotten as a pear needing new floors, rear wings, sills etc), the lead
loading, the painting, the engine rebuild and the trimming. The presenter,
Mark Evans, is genuinely enthusiastic and tries his hand at just about
everything. His mechanical rebuilds are almost all done from items in
plastic bags which led me to believe that he spent a LOT of money - I
suspect with SNG Barratt.

At the end, the car looks beautiful (maybe over restored to some) and is
given the thumbs up from Norman Dewis. Mark looks genuinely choked when the
roll out is performed. Some nice clips of him letting people sit in the car
who all go glassy eyed behind the wheel. Later he has to admit the cost
which comes to a mammoth 85000GBP or 130000USD, so it should look nice…

If you can get it, it’s a nice programme for the uninitiated or as
entertainment. Don’t expect it to be any sort of a guide for restoration
though.

BTW, in Europe most of our good VCRs play NTSC tapes, so it seems strange
that you don’t have the option to play PAL in the US.

Sorry, went on a bit above.

I’ve just sent them a message offering to author this video to DVD (that’s
one fo the services that my company provides). This would eliminate any
problems regarding the PAL format plus we could add in all of the tasty bits
that may have been left on the cutting room floor…

I’ll let you know if they respond.

Just wanted to point out that there has to be an error in the previous mail.
We all know that you can’t possibly spend $130,000 USD on an E restoration

I expect it was $1,300. Isn’t that what we all spend, or thereabouts?

From what I understand, that’s the going rate in Canada for a concours
restoration.

Myself, I’ve spent no more than, gee, $800 or so so far.

Yes, once I picked myself up off the floor, I whole heartedly agree
with Roger, having spent about the same amount, give or take about
$7.50.
As for the other issue, yes dear, I’ll pick up some bread on the way
home tonight.

I got the following message from Discovery:+++++++++++++++++++++++
Thank you for contacting Discovery Networks. It’s always great to hear from
our

Mostly boilerplate text, but they at least had to paste in the title of the

So it probably wouldn’t for everyone to let them know that they’d like to
see it here. The address is Viewer_Relations@discovery.com

here’s the response I got from the discovery channel:

I’ve sent a message to the producers of the program to see if they’re
interested. Maybe I could get a reading from the people on the list. How
many would be interested in purchasing a DVD of this program…

I’ll let you know as soon as I get more feedback…
