[E-Type] A potential cause for speedometer fluctuation,and a?

Hi,
I was on the John Twist site a couple of months ago and he
mentioned that if the transmission flange nut was loose the
speedometer gear on the tailshaft could slip giving one a
wavering speedometer. I’ve noticed that on the V12
transmission the speedometer drive gear is set the same way.
Since it isn’t ‘keyed’ it could slip as well.
Now for the question, anyone know what the torque setting
should be for the flange shaft? I can’t find any reference in
the ROM or Haynes manuals.
Thanks,
Lynn–

The inner speedo cable was the culprit in my case, Lynn. A
slight kink was rubbing the inside of the outer cable
causing the needle to waver. New cable fixed it.–

The speedo on my 69 was not functioning and I had to
replace the angle gear which was stripped and while I was
at it replaced the cable. You can test the cable by
attaching a drill in reverse only at the tranny end of the
cable to see if cable is binding. A good lube with graphite
or light oil also helps but most advise do not lubricate
too close to the speedo and leave several inches bare as
oil might affect the speedo.Keep any bends in the cable as
wide as possible when installing.–

Lynn,

It’s in the Haynes XJ6 manual, manual gearbox (4.2 synchro
box), ‘‘gearbox output coupling flange nut’’ 100 ib ft. The
auto trans spec is 90 to 120.

If it is loose i.e. discernible play in the output flange -
then the speedo may waver and a healthy application of the
gas pedal will allow the drive gear to lose grip on the
mainshaft and the speedo will read low. Usually ‘‘resets’’
after a stop and things cool down… Don’t ask… etc…

Regards

Thanks for replying Nick, Allen. Appreciate the thoughts and
will make sure that the cable is properly situated when I
start the re-assembly process (getting close).
Cheers,

Thanks Keith,
That’s exactly what I was looking for, I wonder why the
speedometer gear wasn’t/isn’t keyed?
I found a spec for the ‘companion flange’ on the auto box
which was 90-120 ft/lb so I was going to guesstimate 100, but
it’s nice to have a basis for the guess. Thanks,
