Thank goodness you and Judith are both OK. Cars are easy to repair.

Sat. night on the way to dinner with another lister I had my first accident
with the Jag. We were pin balled on I-8. Car one swerved and hit car two
which of course was two lanes to the right and behind Judith and me. We were
cruising at 65 in the fast lane when the “love tap” hit. I do not know the
relative speed calculation any more but it was a loud crack and a mighty
push in the rear. After pulling off to the side of I-8, there was damage
only to the right rear bumper bayonet and the tail lamp assembly. No visible
paint damage and no dent. Both of the Hondas had lots of crumples. Nobody
was injured in any of the cars. The CA highway patrolman was amazed and
remarked that the Jag really had great bumpers. I told him he should have
seen my 55 Buick! Now those were some bumpers! Also, after the accident my
headlights would go out without warning. Flick the switch and they would
reappear. Is it the switch or the fuse holder ? Suggestions are welcome.
The insurance adjuster won’t be here for a few days at least.

OH STINK!!!
But I guess that is about a little “tissue damage” as you canhave.
There might be paint damage under the bumper…

Allan,

I’m sorry to hear about the accident - but very glad that you are all right.
That’s what’s important!

As for the headlights/switch. With the prince of darkness it’s impossible
to be sure what is connected to what and how. I had an MG that I had to bang
the left fender twice to get headlights. Once on they stayed on as long as
needed.

Good Luck

Hi Allan and Judith,

Again, I’m glad you made it home ok. It didn’t occur to me when your
car started right up and the lights came on and everything, that you
might have had problems later on. Of course you could have called and
we would have come to pick you up and take you home, but you’d probably
hate to leave your Jag on the road overnight, and I have no towbar that
would fit it… anyway, I guess it all worked out.

If you need some help with that headlight problem maybe I could be of
service. There are a couple of difficulties, though. One is that
inevitably as soon as one starts to troubleshoot something like this, it
works perfectly until the next inopportune moment when you really need
it, at which point it will assuredly fail again. The other is my crazy
schedule. I am so tight for time right now that it makes me nervous
just to think about it. But if the light problem seems at all
repeatable, and if you need help, let’s see if we can tackle it. There
aren’t that many connections in that circuit.

Thanks for putting us in touch with Roger Townsend! He called and left
a funny message on our answering machine, and Diane called HIS machine,
so one of these days we will probably be getting our membership
application materials. The club could be a lot of fun. Diane would
certainly enjoy it.

Well, gotta go, but do let me know about the light thing. If I recall,
besides the incantation, you wiggled the switch to get the lights back
on. Have you swung that panel down and just done a visual to see if
anything is obviously loose or dislodged?

Take care,
Barrie----

The saga continues. I have replaced the headlight switch which broke
when we were hit on I-8 from the rear at 65 mph. It seems that the
right rear taillamp assembly and chrome facia must be replaced and
the rear bumper rechromed and “corrected” what ever that means. Three
independant adjusters looked at the damage and came within $35 of each
others estimate. That is amazing. The bumper and overriders did their
jobs perfectly. However, the design of this safety system transmitts
the energy to the body after the initial shock is absorbed. Also the
right door must be adjusted. No visible paint damage. Check in hand I
am off to see the WIZARDS at La Jolla Auto Body (plug intended)…
$2400 and subject to increase after the bumper is removed. By the way
the CHP did look at both the front and rear plates. The trooper loved
the way the front plate flips down to let more air into the engine.
He also checked (actually pulled on the belt) the belts and buckles.
Needless to say he had no idea what kind of a car or year it was as it
was older than him by a few years. Nobody hurt in any of the three
cars involved. The Honda that hit me will need a new front clip and
right rear fender . The Honda that hit the Honda that hit me had a
little fender damage. Jaguar runs fine and even the right rear tail
lamp works. We consider ourselves very lucky in all respects. Allan
