[E-Type] Air conditioner installation 70 2+2

Recently I had a J-L poster ask about pictures I had sent
another poster in regards to my A/C installation in my 70
2+2. He mentioned there were few pictures and he wanted to
add A/C to his car and would I send him some pictures.
Since he is the fourth person to ask about pictures I
thought posting them on J-L photo album might give
everyone access to them.
I am not talented enough to make a ‘Web page’ like many
have such as David L., New hill Garage, etc (which I have
used and find helpful). But I have been taught how to post
these pictures so here goes.

http://www.jag-lovers.org/v.htm?1469330380

I have posted three sets of 12 photos yesterday and today
and there are some more in my ‘Photo Album’ that you can
page back to see.
I hope they are helpful. I will be glad to try and answer
any questions but do not promise to be correct at all
times.
I have used the JCNA A/C booklet which is very good and
have talked to George Camp about the compressor, he was
good help.
When I was starting the engine work I washed out the block
with a hose and a power washer and got out all kinds of
sand, scale and debris. I had the radiator rodded. My old
fan motors started to make some noise so I have installed
Cool Kat fans and so far in Nebraska 95 degree heat the
A/C works well and the temp gauge is in the middle.
My car came with ‘factory’ A/C. I rebuild what needed to
be rebuilt which was the evaporator case and bought a
rebuilt compressor from George Camp.
Good luck with the A/C.

Regards, Joel.–

Hi Joel,

I rebuilt my AC system, as well, but did not go so far as the
pulling the evaporator. I was able to clean the coils, in
situ, installed new hoses, flushed and filled the compressor
oil and put in the modern refrigerant. I have a very slow leak
so I just re-fill each year and the system works well (I tried
to trace the leak with a dye and UV light, with no joy).

I have to ask, as I see your tube frames in the photos- is/was
your car silver? My frames are green, too, and original to the
silver body.

Thanks for helping others.

Huff;
The car was originally ‘Willow green’ and I used a ‘BRG’ in
the restoration. I had to replace my subframes as I found
holes in the brazed joints after cleaning all the grease off
of them.
Thanks for asking.
How is your project coming along or are you taking a rest
from it?

I rebuilt mine too, even found a new York compressor at a “close out” sale. I had a small leak that eluded me for years until it got big enough to find. Turned out to be one of the old valves (two on the compressor). I replaced them both and have been leak free for a couple years now.
Just don’t overfill the 134 like I di… umm, overfill the 134 like some idiot I know did, and lock up the compressor and shred the fan belt.

I also rebuilt my A/C system years ago. Added a Sanden compressor
new dryer and expansion valve. Flushed condenser and evaporator.
Rebuilt evaporator case using fiberglass and epoxy where broken.
The other day blocked off two far right vents with a vinyl strip
inside because my wife was always too cold. A sign that this thing
is working better than when new.

LLoyd if you got the correct compressor on close out I think it
was a Tecumseh not York. As far as changing to the Sanden or any
other of the common moderns you will gain little over a Tecumseh
other than when it fails it corrupts the entire system. As I have
said before the beauty of the Jaguar system was you can remove the
compressor without discharging the system. The Sanden unit is
slightly lighter and takes a small amount less of engine power to
preform. On an XK engine it is almost impossible to feel that. As
far as compressing the gas to make cold they both do the same—
the proof----use each to pull down a set of gauges and watch them
both bottom out at around 28 deg of vac.–

There is no number on it. Had gotten it from Retro Air. The
advantage in getting it from them is that the correct fittings and
bracket are included making it an easy upgrade. Also there are at
least two bracket variations. One vertical compressor another on
its side. At the time paid about $400.
I had done some research on the Sanden compressors and believe it
is a 5 cylinder SD5H14 but don’t hold me to it.

George I know you must really like these compressors and maybe I
just had a bad one from the start when new.
My father also had Jag from new and A/C was not worth a darn.
At the time the Jag dealers could have used someone who was
knowledgeable about A/C. Hornberg dealer said ‘’ Just drive along
the beach’’ to keep cool. Finally cool with the Sanden and no
leaks.

Hi Joel,

Your frames may have come from a silver car, in which case.

I am in the ‘‘super-planning’’ stage as I need to lick my
financial wounds (read ‘‘waiting game’’) but yet need to look
ahead enough to save some money on purchasing other than at-
the-last-minute (trolling ebay, ads, etc…for used or sale
items), but without loading up my tiny garage. Some equipment
I am going to rent, some buy outright. The delicate dance
around my teeny workspace has to go just right or else the
project will stall and I don’t want that to happen. I do a lot
of work off-site, repairs of this and that for myself
(sailboat) and others and I am pretty good at setting up my
tools and materials so as to not be stuck cursing myself for
not bringing this or that. Balance is key, as bringing along
too much eats up space and is heavier to tote. A little more
than is needed is okay, but much more than that is a burden.

I have turned down a nice running 4.2 from a 74 XJ6 as it was
around $1K , which was probably fine, price-wise (even tho
tales of whole cars for much less, are out there, but I have no
room for picking apart a car and storage, therein) as I will
take that dough and put into repair of what I got.

This time using a bore dial gauge instead of trusting the
machinist.

Hope all is well.

I replaced the Tecumseh with a Sanden on my old 2+2. IIRC
it a was the Sanden 208. This time on the FHC I bought a
rebuilt Tecumseh which is putting out plenty of cold in
100F high humidity weather.

When I did the 2+2 I recall George Camp stating there was
little to gain with the Sanden; about 5 lbs, and maybe 5 HP
would be my estimate, and you will need new hose fittings
at the compressor, a different fan belt and an adaptor
mounting plate for the compressor. Having ran both on two
different cars I tend to think George is correct.–

For those who want to keep it stock, there are repair parts available
for Tecumseh. Santech is one manufacturer that offers seal kits,
gaskets, bearings, orifice valves, and miscellaneous repair parts.
You can find their catalog here:

The clutch coil is also still available.

Original off the shelf compressor is not the same unit that Jaguar
used. Looking at the casting you can see it was modified, cut
down. And clutch may be different also. Sure George can explain
the differences better than I. I just remember looking at catalogs
and they were not the same.

I just went down and measured the height, length and width
of the original I replaced and the one I bought from
Summit. Those dimensions are identical as are the mounting
bolt layout and the location of the suction and discharge
ports. The unit comes without a clutch; you use the
original, so no issues there.–

John the proper unit for an E type has the sides milled and this
is evident on the 4 prongs that the electro magnetic clutch would
mount. These tangs are not drilled and on on side almost half
milled off. This is why the E-Type uses an internal mount for the
coil using 3 of the 6 bolts that hold the front shaft seal. Lots
of imports used the HG 500 but only the E type seems to have used
the milled down version. I have seen these offered by vendors and
will look at Summit.–
