Something about a 28 cyl, supercharged, 4300hp radial!
It weighs a bit more than the V-12.

Hi Paul,
One of the fellows that used to be in the club was also a radial
lover and had a tape called “Round sounds” that was of Thunderbolts,
Corsairs etc flying by. There was a lot of stero effect and it was
pretty neat to hear them fly by from right to left.

OR the P-W R4380, the “CornCob!” Love ANY round engine! I got the hear
all 4 of’m fire up on the lone flying Lockheed Constellation, the
“Connie,” at Oshkosh in 1992…WOW!!!
That was the main reason I spent $1800 (in 1992!!) for a Saito 3 cu. in.
5-cylinder radial for my GeeBee Senior Sportster kit plane…it just
couldn’t make 2-stroke noises and look right! And it sounded sweeeet!

Bob,
Whenever I hear one of those it will get me out of the house every
time. Usually its a WW2 relic flying by. Not very frequent but I
can’t help but wonder what the sound must have been like back in the
early 40s when there were hoards of these things. I doubt people were
standing in their yards agape like I do  But the sounds must have
been awesome. They’re just so different than today’s 1000hp motor.
These things sound like they’re idling but on the contrary they’re
boring holes in the air with gusto.

A round engine makes me look up every time as well as the sound of
any jet fighter.
My father and I used to drive down to Birmingham, Alabama to visit
the instructor who taught him to fly as a cadet. It was always fun
to ride in and take the controls of the T-6, get a lesson in the
Piper Cub or ride in the nose of the B-25. But nothing could match
the raw power and noise of a ride behind the Rolls Royce Merlin of
his P-51. That any WWII Mustang pilot could still hear was a minor
miracle.
Today’s engines don’t give the same sense of brutish, explosive
power.

His land transport was and may still be an XJ-6 (ObJagContent)

Jim,
Clearly the line between planes, cars and boats is very thin if not
gray  I guess it comes back to the fact that they’re machines and
sometimes they’re awesome. When awesome machines talk, we listen
I’ve ridden in a B-25 and T-6, flown a cub (with floats no less) but
only watched the P51. I can only imagine that ride!

Back in 1944-45 I was a 7 year old who did just that, stand in the front
yard and watch the formations fly overhead. We could tell the P-47’s from
the P-51s and the B-24s from the B-17s and B-29s. B-29s were manufactured
in my hometown and hearing fromations of planes was an everyday occurance.
Still like the sound of that in line Merlin engine.

Richard,
I can change plugs all day long. But it’s adjusting the valves that
scares me! How do you find TDC on a 28 cylinder with 3 rotating
rings for camshafts?

The penultimate development of the piston engine! It only took 115
octane. Paul S. said that he runs out of the house at the sound of
a radial. Me too! It’s the sound of torque.

Wiggy was talking about the Constellations. I grew up along the
approach path for JFK. To this day I remember looking up and seeing
four engine planes on 3, and occasionally 2 engines. (They used to
call Constellations the best 3 enginine plane ever made.)

No wonder Shatner was looking out the window!

Dave,
Been there done that. In '67 our unit flew from Frankfort Germany to
El Paso (Ft. Bliss), in IIRC a DC4, a 4 engine plane anyway. We lost
one engine absolutely in the middle of the leg between Ireland and
Newfoundland. Lots of water to land on

Any of you who want to hear radial engines should come and
visit. Every day in the summer 10 to 20 (or more)
floatplanes bring tourists to the Butchart Gardens and take
off again, a few hundred metres from our house. The Twin
Otters are pretty quiet, but the Beavers can raise a
whitecap (or a redcap) in the wineglass on the deck.–

Butchart Gardens is one of the most beautiful places on earth! We visited
the Pacific NW last year and spend a whole day at the Gardens. Love those
Beavers though for load carring ability!

In the mid-90s, before my stint in the UK I worked on the top floor
of a building just above Seattle’s Lake Union, where half of those DH
Beavers destined for your back yard took off from. Smack dab in the
middle of this photo in fact:
