[E-Type] Another diagnosis, please

I posted about this before, but now it’s no longer a
curiosity, it’s a challenge. Once more, after three days of
no problems, I was driving along (this time at night,
lights on) when the voltmeter on the dash went from 15 V to
12.5 (both numbers approximate). It’s got to be a loose
connection, but what connection would do that? Once more,
the alternator is fairly new (about 2500 miles) and the car
has a new regulator.–

FWIW mine did exactly the same today. Use a DVM across the battery
to determine if this is real. In my case it was. One of the field
connections at the alternator was loose. YMMV.

That would be my guess, or a faulty didoe pack.–

I guess I’d try all the quick and simple stuff first…

Is the fan belt tight enough?

Is it in good shape and not slipping?

Are the connections at the alternator tight and in good shape?

Is the battery known to be good?

Few quick tests…

Try revving the engine to see if the headlights get brighter when doing so.
This would indicate whether or not the system is receiving current from the
alternator…obviously this is better done at night with the lights
pointed at your garage door or similar.

Try measuring the voltage across the battery with the engine off. A battery
in good shape and fully charged will be around 14+ volts.

Try measuring the voltage with engine running, should be around 15V.

Intermittent problems typically are either wiring/bad connections or brushes
(before they fail completely).

Ian,
Suddenly cutting completely out pretty much has to be a field
problem. Check the connections at the regulator, the alternator
relay (I believe it’s on the mud shield just ahead of the battery),
or the field terminals themselves. Try jumpering the C1 & C2
connections on the relay to bypass it, and see if that gets it
going. If it does, replace the relay.–

Ian:

Check the lower relay on the driver side splash panel; a loose
connection here has an impact on the charging circuit.

Cheers,

You might also try removing the alternator relay and cleaning the contacts.

Hi Ian,

On my xj6 I have the same symptone…I did messure everything and could
not find any strange things.
What I understood from it is that in the beginning the altenator brings more
power and after a while i brings back amp.

David, Paul, Ray win the prize. I’d looked at the
terminals, and wiggled them, and seen nothing amiss. Tight,
clean. This time I took them off. One of them had oil in
it. Guess when I did the valves a drop of oil got past my
drop cloth (sorry) and landed on the terminal. Got between
the spade and the whatever-the-other-bit-is-called, and
provided a pretty good insulator. At least for the moment,
working fine.–
