[E-Type] anti roll bar restoration

On a 1962 Series 1 FHC, Just removed the anti roll bar
links to replace the rubber and I noticed the holes in the
anti roll bar itself were enlarged, so the bolts are sloppy.
The bolt holes in the lower wishbone seem good (are these
shimmed)? What should I do about the anti roll bar bolt
holes, are these shimmed ? Does it make sense to fit grease
nipples to the bolts, by center drilling ?–

gar E,

The anti-roll bar bolts clamp the whole unit tight, no
movement allowed. So, no grease or other lube anywhere,
don’t drill. As long as you can tighten all really hard
and there is no movement you should be OK. I assume you
are using the original rubber grommets in the links (I do)
and if so, the center spacer is what gets clamped hard.
The movement is taken up by torque in the rubber rather
than by any movement. On that note, you have to be sure
that the links are assembled very loosely and then the car
is driven around the block and stopped on a level surface,
where the link bolts are tightened down with all tension
off. That way the rubber torques a medium amount either
way. If tightened with a pre-load movement in one
direction will over-torque and maybe break the rubber.
Same applies to front suspension bushings.

Perhaps you have one of the CJ ‘‘uprated’’ sway bars? They
were, perhaps still are, made with over-sized bolt holes. CJ
will explain why this was done intentionally, but the
explanation is BS. I installed one, tightened the bolts
thoroughly, and a few years later, found the bolts badly worn.
I machined sleeves to go over the bolts and take up the slop,
and the problem has not re-occurred in almost 10 years. Last
I knew, CJ would provide such bushings if the customer
specifically asked for them. You should be able to identify
these sway bars, as they are slightly larger diameter than
stock, and that little bit does improve handling.–

Thanks for the explaination of the operation of the
mechanism. It is most likely stock and not up rated. Just
one more question comes to mind. How are the new bushings
installed in the links and I guess that would explain how to
remove the old ones.–

Gary,

You use a vise and appropriately sized sockets to squeeze
the old one out and then squeeze the new one in. Easily
done. Look at the new one during installation and get it
centered on the link.

Eric,

Not sure I get your comment. Ray says the CJ anti roll bar
helps handling – how is that badmouthing? He’s sure not
saying that the bar is not really uprated.

My first reaction was that the bolts were loose and
wallowed out the holes. Ray takes the opportunity to
suggest that it could be a replacement part from CJ, that
the design is faulty, and that the company (Dan Mooney by
inference) is full of ‘‘BS’’.–

In reply to a message from 64etype sent Tue 29 Jul 2014:

The (rather soft) bolts CANNOT ‘‘wallow out the holes’’ on the
(very hard) sway bar. The wear will be on the bolts, not the
sway bar. The CJ sway bars DO have greatly over-sized bolt
holes, or at least they did for many years. I know, because I
have one, and I believe I was the first to complain about the
hole size. And, as a result, the bolts DO tend to loosen and
wear with use, just as mine did. I’ve seen it several times,
on several cars, as have many others. Last I knew, CJ DID
offer sleeves, just like I made for mine, to make the bolts
fit correctly, and prevent the loosening and wear. And, their
explanation that they made the holes so large on purpose IS
BS. No competent engineer would design it like that.–

The design of the part is not the point, Ray. The point is
that you routinely go out of your way to take shots at CJ
in particular. It’s my understanding that disparaging
vendors is supposed to be off limits. Are you somehow
exempt?–
