[E-Type] Automotive Progress

I don’t get it. My 1950 F-2 Flathead V-8 pickup truck sat idle in
the body shop for 2 years, same old gas, same old points ignition,
etc. Anyway, all the paint and body work is completed so I had it
towed to the house, replaced the starter solenoid, installed a new
6v battery, pushed the starter button and she started right up
{after 2 years of in-activity}. Keep in mind that the choke cable
was frozen so I virtually had no choke. On the other side of the
garage next to the F-2 sits my 74 OTS… newly rebuilt 4 ZS carbs,
fresh gas, state of the art new solid state ignition, new plugs,
good battery, totally functional choke, rebuilt fuel pump, etc
etc. When I go to start this car, it is at least 2-3 minutes of
cranking for her to fire up. Sitting side by side, there couldn’t
be 2 more distinct body styles on the planet.

Dan Siegel

…was that with “real gasoline” in the PHord? Before they started putting the *&%##! in the gas so it evaporates and gums up everything?
Gas could sit in a car for a year in the '70’s, and it would stay good. Not any more.

Dan:
What’s the compression ratio for a flat-head Ford – 5:1?
Concerning your 4 newly-rebuilt Strombergs: do they have the
Automatic Enrichment Devices (AED) on them? Were those rebuilt at
the same time as the carbs were? Did you renew the seat-to-body O-
ring and dig out all the wax and crud that collects between seat
and the body of the AED? Unfortunately, the rebuild kit
instructions do not address the AED overhaul/cleaning (although the
O-rings and other parts are included in the kit). Search the
archives. I’ve posted a procedure in the XJ6 forum on the AEDs.
Once they’re cleaned, starting gets a whole lot faster/better.–

Thanks for all the replies. The 74 OTS got hauled to the body shop
today to take the place of the Flathead so I can’t check whether or
not they had the AED…and I don’t remember rebuilding them either.
Hope that that is the problem. Although when I start the OTS on a
regular basis, she does seem to start up a bit better.

Dan,

I noticed that my cars are quite easy to start if I have
been driving them frequently. Doesn’t even need a choke if
it’s been driven the day before. However, if it’s been a
while (more than a few days or a week or two), then I get
the cold shoulder. The Series III V12 is even a bit worse
in that department than the Series I 4.2 L. But with
choking, they do crank right away and they get warmed up
quickly (Florida cars).

Face it, E-Types are like women, they simply are more
agreeable with regular attention.–

You have to love Ginger for that one…

Of course ‘‘attention’’ is girl ‘‘code’’ for $$$. I get that!

Which reminds me of New York’s quirky vehicle inspection law:

You can’t get a sticker if your ‘‘check engine’’ light is on.
But if you spend $450 in repairs, and the light remains on,
You get a sticker!

Sounds like the DMV needs ‘‘attention’’ too!
