[E-Type] Auxiliary Driving Lights

I am considering adding auxiliary driving lights to a series 1
car to improve night lighting. I could add a bar between the
bumper horns, drill a hole in the bumpers but I really don’t
want to drill holes in the bonnet. Has anyone done this and
what was their solution.
Thanks–

You could fab up a bracket that ‘dangled’ from the existing bumper
mount point to put the driving lamps on. I used the extant holes
Dad made for brake cooling: the lights addition is a WELCOME one!

I used Hella ‘‘CatzEyez’’ since they’re small, made by Hella, and put
out out good light.–

In reply to a message from Gary Herzberg sent Tue 1 May 2012:

Gary:

Way back in time, I mounted auxiliary driving lights to my
Series 2 by drilling two holes in the bumper a couple of
inches towards the inside of each headlight. The lights were
mounted above the bumper so they were not prone to damage by
road debris. They were also not blocking the radiator
intake. At the time, I bought two chromed light holders from
JC WHitney and mounted a 4’’ diameter #4537 aircraft landing
light (12 VDC, 100 watts) in each one. They were controlled
by a relay which was controlled by the headlight flashing
contact on the turn signal. There was another switch to
enable the system. One flash and they turned on, another
flash and they went off. This was important since the lights
were so bright that they would have totally blinded any
oncoming traffic if they weren’t switched off in time. These
effectively turned night into day and were bright enough to
render colors clearly at night. The only drawbacks were they
drew a lot of amps and you were limited in where you could
use them since they were a hazard to oncoming traffic. They
were useful driving out from about the mid-west to the
Rockies since traffic was sparse. They would probably be
fine in Montana. You would not out-drive these lights. That
being said, there are probably a number of Halogen lights
which would also work. However, I do remember that when I
bought the 4537’s, there were relatively inexpensive.

Check out Bosch SBQ7 headlights. They replace the sealed
beams without modification and are BRIGHT! A much better,
rectangular light pattern.–

You’d have to install supplementary wiring and relays.
Standard wiring is barely adequate for H3s, never mind H4s.–

I feel–or at least remotely sense–your pain: I can still drive at

Just went to the opthamologist last week…and he delivered the
WONDERFUL news I’m beginning to get cataracts.

Just duckin’ fu…oh, wait, that doesnt work.>;-(

No biggie, I had cataract surgery when I was in my late 40’s. You
get new lenses surgically inserted. Colors are so bright again
you’ll be bowled over. The difference is like when Dorothy opened
the door of the house in OZ and thw world went from sepia to
color. As a bonus if you are far sighted like I was, 20/400 in
each eye, the lenses they implant can correct you back to 20/20.
Goodby contact lenses and glasses. I only need reading
glasses for fine print.–

Thanks for the supportive words: I know cataract surgery is duck
soup, these days, and though I’m not at all squeamish about
surgery, on my eyes?..well, it’s why I’ve avoided lasik et al,
till now.

Doc sez it should be wihin 10 years I’ll need to have the
intraocular lenses installed (presently, I ‘‘see’’ no foggiesness or
fuzzy vision) so when it I do, I’ll suck it up and have it done.

I may well at that time also have my myopia corrected to a
monovision set-up, hoefully making it so that I’ll only need
glasses for reading.

It’ll be weird, seeing w/o specs: I’ve worn them since I was 2.–

going through it righ now
had left eye done 3 weeks ago (Fri the 13th) right eye next week
it’s hard the expalin the difference, since the deteration is so slow over
the years
it’s hard to notice the big difference
a simple explation would be something like watching the sun set, it’s dark
then you wake up & it’s daylight, the difference is night & day
left eye is now better than 20/30, still need glasses for somereading, not
bad for 67
think age may have an effect on whether you get to 20/20
my daughter droveme home & I don’t even rememeber it
they really knocked me out about 8 AM, didn’t wake up till that nite
she said we were only there a little over an hour
spent more on eye drops than the surgery>

actually I still do, even after 3 weeks
since only one eye is done I really notice the difference
don’t drive much at nite,
but did notice there are no more halos arould the bright lights with the
left eye
I’m just amazed at the difference, something you take for granted until it’s
