I am renewing the top on my 61 OTS and there is a lot of old
contact cement on the header panel which will need to be
removed. I could grind most of it off, but there must be a
more elegant way. Will paint stripper work or ???

Sometimes you can yank off hunks of it by pressing duct
tape on top of it then pulling it off again (like a hair
removal waxing - not that I really know what that is like).–

I used lacquer thinner and 3M scotchbrite pads. Messy, but worked.–

So what’s wrong with actual contact cement cleaner?
It’s always worked for me, and contrary to some of the other
suggestions here, it normally won’t harm paint or plastic.
My PVC hatch surround trim was covered in it but it all came
off just fine.–

Thanks for the suggestions. I had some old Aircraft Paint Remover on the shelf and decided to give it a try. It worked pretty well over the metal and cleans up with water. It took a couple of coats to remove the cement where is was built up. Still nasty stuff though.
Next Question, this one is HARDER. What should I used to clean the old contact cement off of the INSIDE of the Amco top material? I am fairly certain the the Aircraft Paint remover would destroy the top material in short order. I’d like to save the top as it is in excellent condition. I have no ideas on this one.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover 08984. Works GREAT.
Doesn’t harm car finishes or fabric. I’ve used it for
years. http://tinyurl.com/8g8d75s--

Thanks Clive,
I have never used contact cement cleaner. I’ll try it on a little spot and see if the top fabric holds up to it.

I’ve used the 3M General Purpose Adhesive remover to clean
contact cement and even the black 3M Super Trim Adhesive off
of vinyl panels with no problem. In fact I was restoring a
panel on my original hardtop headliner and stripped off all
of the glue using the 3M remover without damaging it. It is
slow and painstaking because the glue adheres so well to the
fabric backing but it came off bit by bit.
And yes Aircraft Stripper is highly concentrated methylene
chloride. It will tear right through vinyl assuming that is
what your top is. I’d advise you to not go near it, nor
anywhere near your car really. That stuff is nasty. I
almost destroyed my hardtop by using it. I had to have a
shop that specializes in fiberglass repair apply new gel coat.–

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to try the 3M contact cement remover and see how it goes.
