[E-Type] Birthday

A whole lot of you have written on my Facebook page to wish me a happy
birthday.

I wanted to thank all of you and everyone on the list for being so much
fun and such a friendly group to hang around with.

Yes, It’s a bitch turning 65 and I just hope I can hang around here a
few more years and have fun with the group and my e-type.

I’m sort of semi-retired but teach computer science classes for the
local community college. This fall I am actually teaching 5 days a week.

I thought retirement meant you didn’t have to work 60 hours a week for
darned little pay?

In my old age I am a member of a local non-profit who is trying to bring
the drive-in movie back to Tucson.

Here is some info on our latest project:

On Saturday night we had our first fundraiser to create a new non-profit
drive-in in Tucson, AZ.

We had about 600 people show up for our presentation, mostly young
families with children.

The media gave us a lot of coverage. These are typical:

http://tinyurl.com/63pe3nf

We raised over $3,000 for our first event and plan to do many more to
get the project underway.

There is a lot of interest in a family-oriented venue, and we had a lot
of fun doing it. We showed “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” because
it was the last film shown when our last drive-in closed on Oct 3, 2009.

We licensed the film through Swank Motion Pictures. We had a short
promotional video of our project, some classic drive-in snack bar
commercials, as well as a public domain cartoon and the feature
presentation.

I set up four sets of drive-in speakers on poles for those in lounge
chairs near the screen, and we broadcast the audio over low-powered FM
for those in vehicles.

We plan to do many more, and the community response is overwhelming!

When I went to the mail this morning, we had more donations pouring in!

I didn’t take the e-type as we used my wife’s Nissan pickup for the
projection booth and I had a lot of stuff to bring like four sets of
working drive-in speakers on poles, amplifiers, FM transmitters, DVD
players, DVD projectors, etc. We had a great time and the community
response was overwhelming!

George,
Love that!! Good on ya for going forward with the project. It is
rather nostalgic to think of the fun we had at the drive in when
teens. Bringing back some of that can only be a good thing! Oh and
happy Bday

Happy birthday, George!

What fun! Drive-ins… I wonder, does your place beam the
soundtrack out on FM? That would seem to me to really improve the
sound and be a lot cheaper for the theater.

Obviously I have not been to a drive-in for decades.

Yes, the soundtrack is transmitted on low power FM in stereo. One of
the comments we had was how much better the sound quality was than at
our previous drive-in. Ironically, we are using the same transmitter.

I just know how to set it up properly as I once was licensed as a
broadcast engineer. You can’t mismatch the cable, antenna, and
transmitter and expect anything good!

I just brought along some speakers on poles for the folks sitting in
chairs near the front and they added nostalgic atmosphere to the event.

I was actually picking up the FM sound with a tuner and sending it to an
amp which fed the speakers so it provided an “air check” function as well.

This thread got me off TDC: called George to catch up, and he’s about to sell his E and his Zs, in favor of another Tesla!

Onwards!

Good to hear anything from George! He and some friends were heavily involved in the Drive-in history thing back in the 90s. I sent him some photos of Drive-ins in CT and one from MO that got published in a calendar they published back then. I enjoyed seeking them out and participating. Understand him selling the toys, that day comes eventually and appropriately. Better than it languishing in a garage when its no longer comfortable for us to drive it, pass it on. It makes me crazy to see cars that have been left out or idle for years. Why???

Retirement means doing what ever you want. That may include teaching young kids. It definitly includes playing with a Jag’.
