[E-Type] Bonnet Alignment

Hi Listers,
Finally got time and space to remove bonnet from my 66FHC. I knew before
removal that the fit was poor, with about a 3/4" gap at the bulkhead. I was
surprised to find NO shims on the drivers side and 4 thin ones (about 1/8"
total )on the pass side. Now I am concerned that after my rebuild the bonnet
won’t fit well. Any suggestions?
In other news… The fall Krusemark Auction was here this weekend. There
was a 70 OTS that was being offered. It had pictures showing a “complete”
resto that said “spent over 100K”. Of course the first thing I noticed when
appoaching the car was yellow weatherstrip adhesive yucked out around the
door seals! I hope the owner was lying about the 100K. I didn’t get to see
it auctioned, so I don’t know what happened to it. Probably did not make
it’s reserve of a gazillion bucks.

Okay,so I’ve read previous post, bought additional shims and
after five hours of trying, my bonnet is pretty much where
it started.

It all began by trying to move the bonnet about 3/16’’ away
from the firewall on the left hand side. Seemed easy
enough. Loosened the four bolts on the left hinge plate,
inserted a shim. After multiple attempts I’ve now got about
3/8’’ of shims on the left side in addition to a couple on
the top of the left hinge plate. I also added a couple to
the right side to try to get an even seem.

Then I moved on to the wings. The bonnet needed to move
over to the right about 1/4’’ which managed to do but when
all bolts were re tightened the original lack of gap on the
left reappeared. No additional shims were added all I did
was loosen the hinge bolts to move the bonnet over and I’m
back to square one. This bonnet appears to defy the laws of
physics.–

Good question, I’ve just finished taking my bonnet apart, many
photos were taken. Shims cataloged. All I could think of was- there
is no bloody way this will go back together the way it was. But I
plowed on anyway. Now I have a bucket of screws nuts bolts and some
sheet metal. I’m interested in the answers to follow.

What has worked best for me is to loosen all of the hinge bolts,
add/remove shims, center the bonnet as well as possible with all of
the bolts still loose, then incrementally tighten all of the
bolts. As you tighten various bolts check to see what effect each
one has on the positioning and back off or snug it as appropriate.
Sometimes just the sequence of tightening can make the difference.–

Correction: ALL XKE bonnets defy the laws of physics. And spatial
reality. They are the automotive equivalent of a Klein bottle…–

I 100% agree with Jack’s instructions. My only added comment would
be that whatever gap you are trying to reduce, make the gap too
small before tighening the hardware. For me, gaps always opened up
when I tighened the bolts.–

If I can’t fix it, I’ll fix it so no one can !
