[E-Type] Bonnet landing strip

I’m referring to the rubber strip that the rear of the
bonnet rests on. It is glued onto a channel that runs along
the top of the firewall. However the strip is longer than
the channel and about 9’’ overhangs both ends.

What should be done with this excess length? Should it just
dangle unattached or should it be glued to something?–

It should be trimmed flush with the edges of the dropoff.–

About 4’’ below the edge of the channel on each side there
should be a metal tab that sticks out from the bulkhead. This
can be bent to hold the ends in place.–

They come a bit too loog. See where the original fits, cut to fit.

It continues down the side of the firewall, there are a couple of
clips the ends stick into. At least there is on the '67.

Another lesson taught to a longtime time E-type owner. I had
assumed how it was when I bought the car (after all, only 14 years
old at the time, ahem) was original. That’s how I replaced it
decades ago. Seems I need to replace it again. Thanks.–

I don’t see any clips on my '63 - maybe missing or a later
addition.–

Can’t tell what’s holding it down but the rubber strip on these '62
cars look just like my car. I have no idea what function the extra
length down the side performed but was there for a reason otherwise
they could have cut off much shorter and saved miles of rubber. One
thing I’ve noticed on my car is when it gets wet (rare) something in
the rubber compound causes it to adhere to the bonnet and it will lift
the seal when raising the bonnet. Perhaps this extra length is an
anchor for this or maybe its just my car.

That looks like logical place for the extra length, but I
can’t discern what that achieves.–

Me either, hoping someone here with more knowledge can explain. Its
one thing to know it belongs, quite another to know why. With the
tabs on at least some of the cars it was obviously placed there
purposely but why?
