[E-Type] Bonnet Lock Rattle

Hi All,
My right bonnet lock rattles. I thought I would fix this by
screwing in on the latch. Of course I ended up breaking the clip
that hold the assembly together. In looking in the parts book I
found under the part number for the clip a mention of an ‘‘o’’ ring
that is used to stop the rattle.

Does anyone know where this '‘o’'ring is fitted and then what size it
is. I spoke to Terry’s and SNG barrett and neither has any info on
the ‘‘o’’ ring. SNG had the clip.

Many thanks,

Yes, they’ll rattle if not adjusted just right. I used a piece of self adhesive
dense foam rubber for the stop, about 1/8’’ thick. It goes against the flat
pad on the rod. Can’t say where to get the clips except that they are
exactly the same as the ones on the SU carb linkage.–

Yep, mine was the same way when I took it apart. When you unscrew the
handle from the push rod, and pull the rod out, you’ll find that little
flat tang sticking out to the side of the rod. Affix some rubber or
foam or some such thing to the front face of that. When it is turned to
locking position it will bind against the inside of the bulkhead, and
will not only prevent rattle but provide enough resistance to give you
comfort that the latch will not vibrate open and allow the bonnet to pop
while you’re driving.

My push rod has some foam on it. Probably the original. Do you
think it was rattleing because I had it turning the wrong way and
therefore it did not bind up to the bulkhead?

Thanks,

I solved the same problem on my 69 OTS with a rubber o-ring from
the local hardware store, in the plumbing section. I think its the
1/2 inch size one. About 10 cents, and identical to the one that
broke, which may or may not have been original to the car. I
actually took the mechanism apart to put the ring on, then realized
that they should have enough stretch in order to slide over the
chrome handle to the proper fit. Maybe buy a few extras in case–

Where does this '‘o’'ring sit? Mine is totally missing. It sounds
like it is on the chrome handle somewhere.

Thanks,

Kevin,
It sounds like I can easily get a 1/2 inch o-ring at the hardware
store.
Thanks for the offer.

Please clarify: the o-ring sits on the handle-just past the ridge
and seals
between the handle and the chrome plate that is the finisher?

That seems to make sense to me as I look at the parts. There is
about 1/8
inch free play between the parts.

You have been very helpful.

I greatly appreciate your response!

Thanks,

Darn, you learn something every day.

I have a right side latch that would rattle no matter how I adjusted it
and one day my wife wrapped the rubber band from the newspaper around
the front edge of the chrome handle and stopped it.

I thought that was a kludge fix but never realized that there was
supposed to be an O ring there!

Shelley - Yes, you have it right, it seals between the ridge on the
pull-handle and round chrome plate, inside the car. 1/8 gap sounds
about right - the handle should have just the slightest about of
play when pushed in, and you should be able to feel it snug up
slightly as you turn it, holding it in place. If you don’t find an
o-ring that you think will work properly, my offer remains - I had
the luxury of being able to take my broken ring in with me to buy a
new one, sort of like trying to buy the right size bolt when you
don’t have the old one to compare

Good luck–

I went to my local hardware store. Found o-rings in the plumbing
section. I brought my bonnet lock with, as I am waiting for the
linkage clip, and found an o-ring that fit great. It cost 20 cents.

I bought 2 and fit one on the other side also!

Thanks for all of your help!!!

I would bet this “O” ring is missing on almost every bonnet latch you can
find. I now know how to fix the rattle my wife has been complaining about
for years.
