[E-Type] Broken at both ends?

I’ve put up a picture of the dash end of my speedo cable which
shows how it appears to have broken off. In fact it was pretty
much flush with the nylon bushing before I removed the bushing. I
think I can see the broken off part inside the shaft of the
instrument. Haven’t yet figured out how I am going to get that out.

Since I have no rotation of the cable when I drive, I’m afraid it
is probably broken at the angle drive end as well. It looks like I
will either have to pull off the interior tranny cover to get at it
from the top, or remove the exhaust to get at it from below to
attach a new cable. Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks!
Warren

Warren,
I don’t see any way it could possibly get broken at both
ends. Once either end broke, there is no way there’s enough torque
available to break the other end, and the odds of both ends
shearing at the exact same instant are so extreme, it’s not even
worth talking about. So, I would check out the speedo end out
first, then see where you’re at. I would open up the speedo and
see if I could confirm there really is a piece in there. Perhaps
use a piece of wire to ‘‘probe’’ the hole, and see how deep it is.
You might also want to check your speedo by driving it with a VS
drill, to make sure it isn’t locked up.
It makes a lot more sense to me for it to have broken on the
tranny end, and then just dropped down within the housing.–

Warren,

As mentioned off list, I replaced both the speedometer cable and

angle drive in my 1969 E-Type FHC to get my speedometer working. I
removed the transmission cover to gain access to the angle drive.
Although having to remove the console and transmission cover is a PITA,
I don’t know how you can do this job from below.

If I had to do this job again, I would do it again from above

and not remove the exhaust.
