[E-Type] Can I trace a car reg no with its engine no or car no?

I have been offered an E type as a barn find and it has the id
plate with the car no and engine, body and gear box nos. These
tally with the chassis but it does not have a reg no. Can I find
this out from the numbers I have? Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated as I would like to check it out before purchase. Many
thanks.–

You could try Jaguar Heritage (although it may cost you 42).
The car’s first registration number is sometimes recorded in
their build log database and can be included on a Heritage
Certificate. You could try asking if the reg number will be
included if you request a certificate.

The person who deals with certificates is Anders Clausager and
his email is archive@jaguarheritage.org Anders has actually
retired but has returned on a part-time basis to deal with
certificate enquiries.–

Actually what you see called the ‘Car No.’ on the data plate is
what is usually used to register the vehicle (and should be the
same as the number stamped on the picture frame). Later cars (69?)
also had a modern tag on the A pillar viewable through the
windscreen glass.

The car number is encoded in a sense based on what model and even
what equipment in some cases – but bears no resemblance to a
modern VIN.–

‘’…can I find out the original number plate registration…’’

Are you looking for the license plate number it had? Not sure why
that would be needed or of interest but may be available through
the state’s MVD/BMV/DMV if you are in the U.S.

If the owner has the title and the title matches the vehicle I
don’t see why the registration would be useful.

‘‘I have been offered an E type as a barn find…’’

Maybe it’s just me but ‘Barn Find’ seems to be the most over-worked
term since ‘Bistro Style’. We used to call them ‘project cars’ and
it was frequently meant in a negative way.–

It would help if we knew your location; in the US each state does
things their own way. I doubt any state would be able to cross
reference the data you have with a registration # or license plate
#. If you are referring to the chassis #, I think you would be
served best by contacting the Jaguar archives to obtain that,
either here in the states or the Heritage Trust. The JCNA site has
directions on how to do that.–

You don’t say where you are but sounds like UK, in the US the reg. no
usually has no significance. If you are in the UK a JDHT may give you
the reg. no. Its not expensive and you have all the info you need to
get it. You may however have to prove you own the car, in which case
the you could get one on behalf of the current owner.

You should also try to see if there is any info on www.xkedata.com
You will need provide the VIN.

I have a Mark 2 that came to me with no tag, but by
providing JDHT with the numbers for the chassis, body,
engine and transmission, they were able to locate the
vehicle in the archives. Unfortunately, the engine came
from a different car, so it wasn’t a matching numbers car,
but the certificate provided what should have been in it,
and listed what I reported also. Since the vehicle was
delivered Overseas, I got the original UK registration (and
it was a pre-alphabetic suffix, hence a ‘‘cherished number
plate’’ car). I don’t believe a US delivered car will have
the original registration, just the original owner, I
believe. I procured one of the reproduction plates and
reproduced the original configuration on the data plate. The
folks a JDHT were very helpful.–

In reply to a message from 140JAG sent Fri 26 Apr 2013:

The OP looks to be from the UK. Here in the UK we refer to the
‘‘license plate number’’ as the ‘‘reg number’’. The reg number is
the number used when the car is first registered with the UK’s
DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency’’).

Jaguar Heritage’s records often (but not always) include the
reg number given at the date of first registration. As stated
earlier, the best bet is to make enquiries via Jaguar Heritage
(although I believe the JCNA also have duplicate copies of
build records etc).–

The concensus seems to be no unless jaguar recorded it on
first delivery. The only way to know that is to request a
JDHT heritage certificate but I think they will only provide
that to the present registered owner. I think there is no
way DVLA will have a record of it’s original reg no, maybe
it’s present one but nothing more. Does the present owner
have a V5 or is it on SORN? Was it a UK delivered car or one
that has been repatriated?

You might want to have the current owner obtain it and make it a

There is a possibility the car was registered with the JDC by
a previous owner. I have the latest JDC directory of vehicles
and owners which has a reverse look up facility so if you want
to email me the chassis number I will look it up.
Alternatively send me a private message from The E-Type Forum

In reply to a message from tr2tr6 sent Sat 27 Apr 2013:

This isn’t a question either an In ternational forum can
really answer except to point you to the DVLA who can
normally look up a reg and give the VIN or vice versa.
Mostly they’d do that for the Police or someone in law
enforcement - I don’t think you can just email them and
ask for it. So if Jaguar Heritage don’t have it recorded
on the certificate the current owner would have to obtain,
and there’s no old numberplate on the car you’d simply get
an age-related number from Swansea unless YOU could prove
what its original number was and it’s not currently in
use. A lot of E-types went ‘underground’ before they
computerised things and set up the DVLA so there are many
vehicles from before that time still not on the system,
although as barn finds of all types come to light the
number is decreasing. DVLA will be used to this scenario
which is in principle little different to registering a US
re-import that was not previously on their books.

I certainly would not let it put me off a barn find unless
it was a stolen vehicle.

In reply to a message from RGK sent Sat 27 Apr 2013:

In reply to my previous posts, I now just wanted to update the
forum on the events thereafter. I did indeed purchase a Heritage
Certificate for the car which is now in my possession. I managed
to find out that the car was originally purchased in Maidstone,
Kent (close to where I live) and had the original number plate of
KM 1. I know that this was no longer attached to the car as I
actually see this number on an almost daily basis as it belongs to -
MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOUR! Strange, but true! I spoke to her and
she confirmed that the car was originally purchased by her Father
who had it for (she thinks) about a year and then sold it on. He
however retained the number plate as their family business is The
Kent Messenger Group. This therefore drew a blank for me so I had
no alternative than to write to the DVLA. They were particularly
unhelpful on both occasions and I eventually resorted to going into
the Maidstone DVLA where I explained the situation - they were
extremely helpful and confirmed that the car had never been
registered. I was then able to write back to Swansea stating this
and they have said that once the car is restored and has an MOT
then I can apply for the new log book. I am now in the process of
having the vehicle restored. Thanks guys for all your help and
assistance.–
