[E-Type] Car safety and electrical fire

Hallo Listers ,

Has anybody experience or already thought of installing a “add-on fused
circuit panel” , in fact a fused box with maxi-flat connectors in a nice
plastic box exactly like we have in our daily cars ?

Advantage :

  • easy and proven installation under the dash.
  • available cheap ( new around 15 to 30 USD ) .
  • installation out of sight .
  • improves safety as to fire hazard.
  • protects electronic/electric equipment for overvoltage.

I think this is a nice winter project so anybody this side of the pont ,
give a shout in case you want to know more.

Best

A couple of days ago, my fans stopped working. A loose fuse holder
was the problem, getting the end of the fuse so hot, it melted the
wire inside the fuse. Since I has a show to go to the next day, I
used an inline AGC fuse holder with ring terminals on the wires. In
the fuse holder, there is a hole on each side that is perfect for a
#6 sheet metal screw. I attached the ring terminals to each side of
the fuse holder and stuck in a 25a AGC fuse. It worked so well and
was so easy, I just might do it to the other high-load fuses. It
doesn’t look pretty, but I’m the only one to look behind the dash.

Correction. Make that an ATC in-line fuse holder. The one for the
newer flat fuses.

Walt,
Brand new authentic fuse blocks are available for $12, so for $48
you can eliminate any fuse issues for the next couple decades.
Timewise, I’d think you would still be re-routing the wires to an
aftermarket fuse block in the time it would take to R&R the new
fuse blocks. Then there’s the wire ends…

I had the same fuse/fan issue as you did, put all new fuse holders
in and all my intermittant ‘E’ problems disappeared. I spent more
time trying to make the old ones work than putting new ones in.
FWIW.

You can buy an ATC fuse block for a few bucks, may as well do it
right and replace the Lucas blocks. Painless Wiring has a good selection.

Thanks Jim,

Have ordered a few as well as add-on fuse circuit panel from JC
Whitney,they are only 18 to 24 USD.
I think it is safer and better to avoid problems electrical in this
case ) and install a fuse here and there.
