[E-Type] changing paint color on 69 xke coupe

I just purchased a 1969 xke coupe. The car is completely
dismantled. The body is ready for sanding and prep work. The car
was red with black interior. I like willow green with bisque
interior. That color combination was available in 69. Is it a sin
to change colors? Will it lower is value later in life? Any
comments?

From what has been said many times, Jaguar would allow you to order a
car in any color combination, even paint colors outside of “factory
specifications” so go ahead and paint it any color you like.

Unlike say the Corvette crowd, the Jaguar world has not gone
completely bonkers with regards to “factory perfect/matching
numbers/specific options”… at least with regards to value in the
marketplace. You won’t win a JCNA concours, but who cares about that.
Only one car can win, and it can’t be driven.

Paint you car whatever you wish, drive it however you like, enjoy as
much as possible.

Just don’t drop a small-block Chevy into it!

Mike,
Unless you’re building a trailer queen that will never be
driven, paint and interior color have no discernable effect on
value, as long as you stick with some tasteful scheme.–

Chuck,
‘‘You won’t win a JCNA concours’’ - Don’t bet on it. I’ve done
quite well in several JCNA concours with my Nissan Glacier White E-
type, and I’ve never once been dinged for the non-original paint or
interior.–

You like Willow Green?
My 68 OTS was Willow Green and I changed the colour to a
deep VW red during the restoration. I couldn’t care less
about concours or resale.–

Right you are Ray. JCNA rules state “reasonably close” as far as
color goes. I well remember a Concours in Ohio a number of years ago
and there were at least 5 Regency Red S2 & S3 E-Types, including our
69 OTS, and none of them were exactly the same color!

(the sound of my mind hatching a contrarian plot)

After reading Ray’s post, I’m now consumed with the desire
to take Tweety to a concours d’aroggance –shiver– after
painting it poiple and, if ‘dinged’ because it’s not ODM,
saying, ‘‘Well, it’s reasonably close.’’

I love jerking car people’s wangies (Not you, Ray,
concours judges!) like that…;)–

I have a Willow Green '72 OTS, original paint visible here:
http://www.xkedata.com/gallery/zoom/?id=58570

I suspect it is a difficult color to match, but I am about to try
that. Send me an email and perhaps we can compare notes if you go
down this route. I like the color, but then it was my father’s so
I have seen it for 35 years. My wife calls it ‘‘martini olive’’,
didn’t care for it at first, but warmed to it, now likes it.
Personally, I think true beauty requires just a touch of
dissonance, ugliness to make it radiant. The E-Type is so elegant
that slightly weird colors only help.–
