[E-Type] Changing Sump Gasket ON Series 3 V12 ots

Hi all …I am now in the process of starting to eliminate all
leaks from my 74 XKE V12 series 3 ots. I am starting with the sump
gasket. I ordered one from XK’s unlimited and it appears to be a
charcoal colored paper gasket. Haven’t they made any improvements
on this gasket or will this suffice? In addition I noticed I will
have to be changing the O ring on the oil delivery elbow. Kirby
Palm states that whenever you change any O rings they should be
Viton. Does anyone know the size of this O ring and where I can
get a Viton replacement?

Incidentally I want to thank Ray Livingston for all his past help.

Rich, When I changed that gasket it was the same as yours.I think
its OK to use a carefully/sparingly applied sealant on the gasket
to ensure that it seals. I also replaced a number of the O rings in
the oil pick up plumbing, and I used Nitrile o rings bought
locally. To get the correct size you need to recover one of the old
ones to compare with. The problem with O rings as you probably well
know is that you need the correct thickness/crossection size as
well as the correct overall ring diameter.I was unable to find O
rings made from Viton ( which is a fluorocarbon elastomer)and I had
to use the normal Nitrile types which are the ones the usual Jag
parts suppliers would send to you.Kirby is correct in suggesting
that the Viton types would last for ever, but they cost a lot more
if you could find them!Good luck.–

Hi,

I believe Terry’s Jaguar Parts sells ‘‘Cometic’’ gaskets which
are a big improvement.
