[E-Type] Cherry Red Headers?

I have just installed a new SU set up from Burlen, Mallory Unilite,
Pistons, Camshafts, Headers on my 68 E.
I set the static timing at 10 BTDC, Ran at 2500rpm and the timing
was 24 BTDC, I ran the engin eup to 3000 rpm to check the full
advance and then noticed that my new SS Headers from EType Fabs
were cherry red. I shut off the engine immediately and typed this.
What do you think?
I haven’t touched any settings on the carbs yet.
I hope you can advise.

No expert here, but it appears a lot of the combustion process is
occuring in the exhaust as opposed to the combustion chamber.

Are the cams none stock? Do you have a cam card? (opening /closing
of the cams in degrees) and did you ‘‘degree’’ in the cams upon
installation?

Maybe the headers are extremely thin walled, but I don’t think
glowing red is typical under a ‘‘no load’’ condition.

The cams are from Terry’s - TJP25’s - mildly warmed up. I was
careful with the camshaft timing and the timing chain tensionng. I
haven’t made any tuning adjustments to the carbs yet and I am
wondering if the carbs running lean could cause this degree of
heat? It is alarming.

Cheers

Carbs that lean wouldn’t allow the engine to run. Have you
checked the valve clearances? (Again, after the first set-
up?)–

If it is any consolation, I had a similar experience upon initial fire up of my rebuilt V12. In my case I had installed a set of CJ V12 headers and I had also had all four of the carburettors rebuilt by Classic Jag. The carbs – by definition – had approximate settings. In my case the driver side (left hand) headers glowed cherry red within minutes – passenger side was fine. I was inclined to shut down the engine but then how to adjust the carbs? I had a mechanic with me and he said all will be well – just gotta run the engine at high idle for 20 minutes to set the new rings.

The headers were so hot I could not comfortably stand within 5 feet of the car. We shut it down after the requisite 20 minutes. Rings are fine, headers are fine (although they were either chrome or something and now sport the blue-tinged rainbow appearance), car runs real strong after proper settings were applied ro the carbs.

Simon, The first things to check are timing and mixture, you
probably are retarded in timing or very lean or rich(should see
black exhaust) in mixture. A very lean mixture will turn the
headers bright red…how do I know…

mid range is lean… smaller needles in the carbs??? also back off the
timing 6 degrees first to see what happens then check the needles

Sounds to me like they are running too lean. You will burn a valve, eventually that way.

Was this at night by any chance? I had a 4-stoke Yamaha dirt bike
a couple of years back, and I fired it up one night out in the sand
dunes…I shut it down in horror as the stainless exhaust began
glowing bright red.

The next day, I called the Yamaha dealer from the desert, and they
told me not to worry, that was perfectly normal when the bike was
cold.

Sure enough, the glow would go away when the bike warmed up, and
was never the slightest bit visible during the day. On a cold,
dark night, it looked like something a blacksmith would be
hammering over an anvil.–
