But I found a hopeful product for this job that I thought I’d
share. I can’t fully recommend it yet, not enough experience. But
I had wheels dirty from a wet/muddy drive and a week’s driving,
then a few months sitting around. Washing the car, I applied this
cleaner – P21S wheel cleaner. This stuff is loved by Porsche
folks, and is great because it is completely harmless to the
anodized Porsche Fuchs wheels from the cars before the '90s, and
not much is harmless to these. Should do absolutely nothing to
chrome wires.
P21S is a gel product, and can be left on the wheels indefinitely
without harming them. I put it on and left it on for about 30
minutes while I washed two other cars. Then I sprayed it off with
a strong stream – no brushing. They came clean very well, and
were shiny.
I’ll try it again, and maybe even try brushing them. The fact you
can leave it on for a long time and won’t hurt the wheels at all
seems to me to give you interesting options.
YMMV,

Yes, it is a MWV file sent to me, and I don’t know where it came from.

I have done the same with excelent results with Liquid Green
biodegrdable spray. Really gets at the grease. I go after it
w/ hot soapy water and a brush then rinse. I was on the
phone with the Dayton peeps today regarding cleaning their
SS spoked aluminum alloy rim wheels. They said hot soapy
water with a very flexable paint brush should be used to
prevent scratching followed with WD-40 or a wax if left to
sit for months on end. I don’t know how those Ferarri peeps
do it. Anyone know of a mild chemical product that removes
oxidation and crud from untreated alloy rims that is not
harmfull?–

One thing I can tell everyone to watch out for is using an
acidic cleaner on chrome rims except to remove mild rust. My
present original 5’’ wires were at one point rebuild buy #1
owner at dayton wire wheels an converted to SS spokes. Well,
someone, maybe dayton coated the new chrome with a hard
clear coating…like epoxy, that was fine for years. Upon a
tire change, my repair shop dipped all of my wheels in an
acid bath to remove ‘baked on’ brake dust, etc. Very soon
after this I noticed fine spyder webbing on this clear
coating. I can not remove the coating it is so hard. So, my
spokes are nice but my rims weird. I took delivery of 4 new
6’’ aluminum rimmed (really light) SS spoked knock offs
yesterday. So, I will be Mr. Nice spokes until further
notice. I will see if that spyder webbing shows on a pic.–

Lloyd,
Sometimes you can find a source by googling the file name. Then you
can post the URL for that location.

Are these the hyper expensive alloy Daytons that XK’s sells? Can you
post some photos of them on the car. I’ve thought about these in my
dreams, and might buy some (after I make my first Million). Are the
rims polished, and clear coated or do they get dull after a couple of weeks.

Jerry, I appreciate that you also noticed the lack of a proper name.
One of the nice things that this list group has always had is an easy going firt name basis without people feeling the need to hide behind the mask of anonymity. I hope we don’t lose that!
Even famous people here use their proper name. Except for Paul of course!

I think this is an artifact of the wiki and newsgroup syndrome. Folks
think they need to hide behind a handle because there is so much flaming
going on.
As all of the regulars here know, we don’t have that sort of behavior
and I will not allow it. We’re family here, extended as we may be
across every continent, but you get to feel that you would like to
invite most of the list members over for a drink and some shop talk.
I believe that I added a note to the welcome message indicating that at
least a real first name is preferred. I know it’s difficult for folks
to change their screen name once they have registered but an
introduction and signing with a real name is greatly appreciated.

On the subject of cruddy wires, I have taken the ones off of my 65
and dunked them in ‘‘Evaporust’’, billed as a chelating, non-acidic
agent. Frankly, my chemical nose tells me there is some sort of a
reducing agent in there, albeit of mild nature. The results were
super such that I am now only going to replace or rebuild one
wheel. They started looking like wheels that belonged in a junk
yard rather then on the ground. This car had been stored for 17
years and the wheels were so cruddy that I thought they had been
painted at one time, but came out as fine chromed surfaces. The
stuff works well on all rusted steel surfaces. It ain’t cheap, but
sure saves a lot of work. The next step is to finsd a simple
solution on how to keep them looking good. Any suggestions? The
site is www.evaporust.com

I have to agree Jerry. Sicko is clearly the best. I’m disappointed it doesn’t get more publicity.

ps- A few years ago I had several people (a party of 6) and I called a restaurant in Big Sur (Nepenthe) and told thelady who I was and that I needed a table for 6 at 1230 for lunch etc. I shoulda known what was going on becauae she was too enthusiastic. When we arrived, there was a surprisingly large number of staff waiting to greet us. It was embarassing.
Wa a a ait a minnit…I’ve seen photos of Michael Moore…I’ve met Michael Moore in the flesh, this past summer. To the one I
met…where’d all the HAIR go, on the one I saw in the pidgers?
