[E-Type] Clutch Suitability

Does anyone have any input on the best clutch for a 4.2 generating
285 pound feet of torque? I have an aluminum flywheel which seems
to be drilled for the 10’’ coilspring, 9.5’’ diaphram, and 10.5’’ V12
diaphram pressure plates. I don’t particularly want a heavy clutch
or a chattery race clutch. I guess I’m asking if the V12 clutch
will fit in the bell housing as well as which release bearing will
be the correct height for a '67 OTS.–

In reply to a message from Richard Olson sent Sun 7 Nov 2004:

Richard,

On my S1 4.2, I have an AP Racing 9.5’’ cover, combined with a
Jaguar E-Type centre plate, and a standard Jaguar/Daimler release
bearing.

This combination was reccommended by AP Racing, and has proved to
be very effective. The AP Racing clutch is balanced at the factory,
and has a much higher torque capacity than standard (it is the same
as fitted as standard on some recent TVR’s, all of which have much
higher power and torque outputs than a standard E-Type. I cannot
feel any difference in pedal weight, but the action is very linear
and smooth, and is a quantum leap from the crappy re-conned 10’’
spring clutch which it replaced (due to slipping).

I suggest that you contact AP Racing, tell them your situation, and
they will specify the best combination of components. I admit that
had I been luckier with my original clutch, I may not have gone for
the slightly more extravogant AP Racing stuff, but I wasn’t
prepared to risk having to remove the engine again.

Regards,

Garth.–
