[E-Type] Correct 4.2 spark plugs

Having owned a 66 fhc for 16 years I felt that I was pretty
familiar with the basic specs and parts for this car. Today I
noticed for the first time that the owners manual and factory spare
parts catalogue both call for N5 (champion) plugs. Yet the
Bentley, and other manuals call for N11 plugs. What gives? Are
the English heat ranges numbered differently than US spec plugs?
N11(yc) have been used with success, has anyone used N5 plugs?

                                   Regards,
                                    Allen--

Allen!
Use RN12 champion plugs, many listers including me have
prove that their the best for these jags.

Allen,

My Owners’ Manual, Service Manual, and Parts Manual are unanimous:
Champion UN12Y. This is for a late 3.8.

Bentley’s version of the Owners’ Manual is for a 4.2, and they
recommend Champion N11Y. The Bentley’s Service Manual is the same
as mine and recommends UN12Y (p.79). (I had not noticed before the
move from UN12Y to N11Y. Hmm.) The manuals recommend N3 for
racing…

Wonder why your manuals are so different? Is this N5
recommendation on page ix, up front? Or elsewhere? What does your
Owners Manual say on page ix?

could that be a racing plug recommendation?

Is it definitely a Champion number?–

In my operating manual (real) publication No. E/131/2 on page
viii it only lists Champion N5 plugs. No other plug is mentioned.
Strange.

And your 4.2 parts manual too, huh? Boy, that is weird all right.
The Operator’s Manual reprinted in Bentley’s does not have the page
with the document number, but it’s definitely for a 4.2 Series 1
car, and they say UN11Y Champions. My 3.8 manual is an E/122.

Anyhow most of us use NGK BP5ES if that’s any consolation, 3.8 or
4.2. Nothing wrong with Champions either. Not sure I’d use N5s
though, as they don’t have the extended tip IIRC, that’s what the Y
means.

Alan,

Haven’t used N5’s but use N7’s in a substantially modified
engine. Why? Thats what is came with. Despite being a
colder plug they don’t foul up but not really driven around
town at lower revs either. The E-Type competition booklet
recommends N3’s!

Gosh, I remember N3’s as being a really cold plug and were what we
used to run in our two stroke motocross bikes!

N7 is a hotter plug than N3. With Champions the smaller the number
the larger the heat-shedding ability of the plug, i.e. the colder
it runs.

If in doubt, run colder plugs than stock in modified engines, and
only go hotter if you experience fouling.–

The colder plug may also serve to limit detonation knock
(pinging or pinking).
