Hensen,
If you decide to replace the DR3 with another it would be worth checking the
running current of the new motor. The specification for light running at
normal speed is 2.7 to 3.4 amps measured one minute after switch on. For
fast speed it should be 2.6 amps or less. The problem is that the armature
current rises very rapidly once the load is outside the operating range and
this can reach well over 10 amps. The motor is much more sensitive to load
on fast speed because the torque is considerably reduced and so it requires
much less frictional resistance to stall it.
There should be a thermal cut-out in the motor to prevent excess current
from causing the failure of the armature insulation. Evidently this hasn’t
worked in your case. This might be because someone has bypassed it to
overcome a previous problem.
As David has suggested, you would be well advised to check the rack and
wheelboxes in case they are binding. With the arms, blades and motor
disconnected the maximum permissible force to move the cable rack in the
tubing is 6lbs (2.72kg). The easiest way to measure this is with a spring
balance.
Other than the cut-outs which are prone to developing bad contacts, DR3s are
not known for being particularly troublsome and Lucas produced this model
and its derivatives for quite a few years before changing to the permanent
magnet type.

In reply to a message from Hensen sent Sat 26 Sep 2009:
SNG will rebuild the motor for you or you could put in the
more powerful round body one from the S2/3 cars. If your
motor has burned out it is worth checking the wiper rack is
well greased and moves freely. The standard motor should
work just fine if the rack is in good order.

The original message included these comments:
Yes, its the 6 wire one. Armature (2nd one ) burned out -
blue/black look.
Anyway, is there a more modern / robust motor that can be easily
fitted ??
