The coup (normally called fixed-head or FHC) windows do go all the
way down, same as the convertible (OTS). The reason yours don’t is
because you don’t have a coup.

Since the 2+2 roofline is 6’’ higher than the 2-seat coupe and the
doors aren’t significantly any deeper, the window won’t go all the
way down into the door.–

Six inches higher? No way. Only on the North Carolina SUV
version and the rare Florida swamp buggy model  1.5’’
higher screens plus a bulge in the roofline to add a
fraction more.

Not quibbling, but let’s be realistic. According to my
email many people feel a few extra inches they don’t have
make all the difference

On my series 1 2+2, the windows go almost all the way down.
I’d say there is perhaps 1/2’’ left sticking up. It’s low
enough that I can comfortably rest my flabby arm on the top
of the door when zipping around in the summer. What you get
back for that unflatteringly high roofline is easier
in/egress and space for the kids. Cest la vie.

In reply to a message from John7 sent Fri 5 Nov 2010:

The average person in the street doesn’t see it as unflattering,
only us E-type snobs and even then only because the FHC is drop-
dead gorgeous. To people outside they are all E-types. As in life,
if you are good looking but you hang round with really beautiful
you can end up looking ordinary. As Gary Breyer or Angus Moss

I may rebuild the 66 bits I have left into a 66 Series 1 2+2 again
if I don’t need the ID for a new D-type. I’d have any 2+2 in a
heartbeat. The roofline is better on the S2 because it has a more
raked screen which helps its profile. But the S1 has the covered
lights and prettier rear end, so even then it’s swings and
roundabouts. The S3 manages to look hunky most of the time because
of the wider track and flared arches and neater rear lights giving
it a less tall look. Even the tail below the bumper looks less
heavy on the S3 2+2 than on the S3 OTS because there’s more above
to offset it and keep it in balance.

Now when Les gets his tin snips out and makes his 2+2 a LWB FHC
we’ll really have the pick of the bunch

The windows on my 64 FHC don’t go all the way down either. When I last had the
door panels off, I checked to see if the window travel could be adjusted. As the
metal channel at the bottom of the window was solidly against the bottom of the
door, the answer would be no. However the windows on my 61 OTS do go ‘all the
way down’.----- Original Message ----

That’s why both of the e-types that I have owned were OTS!

There’s something special about riding around in a convertible.

In reply to a message from kassaq sent Fri 5 Nov 2010:

Nah, the Brits don’t use cm, and much less in the 1960’s.

The six inches taller is really funny, the roof is roughly
ONE inch taller as is the windscreen, I you don’t much see
it unless you have developed an eye for different kinds of
E-types like most folks over here have!

The FLOOR in a 2+2 is also one inch lower, which results in
TWO inches of more headroom overall, pretty important two
inches for those of us who have a tall back!

The length is the magic NINE inches more than a SWB.
And I just looove those nine inches.

No SIXES in there, but at least my S1 2+2 has a straight SIX
was made in 1966 and has reg. JAG-66 so that’s enough sixes
for me. Before we get back to the ‘‘if six was nine’’ debate
with Pete… %-)

Six inches higher roof, now that still makes me laugh…

Not Sure if there is consensus here, but my 1972 Series 3 windows certainly do not go all the way down.

6 cm = 2.36 inches, which seems exactly right with my car.

Can anyone else confirm this ?

Thank you

James

Confirmed…
