[E-Type] E-type as daily driver

no question mark… it’s not a question but a decision: I’m goign to sell
the XKR and use the E-type as a daily driver!

been wondering about it for a while, every time i drive the E-type i ask
myself why don’t i drive it everyday like i used to when i bought it 6
years ago…

i drove the E-type to the Jacksonville concours on saturday, a 650 round
trip, an realized i really didn’t need to keep two cars… I always use the
E-type for the fun trips on week ends, club events, etc… so i’m only using
the XKR for a 10 minute in town commute on week days… it’s a great car, I
love the (almost) 400hp kick in the butt feeling, but doesn’t make any
sense.

so if anyone is interested in a blast to drive 2000 Silver XKR coupe with
about 60k (steel liner engine/upgraded tensioners)… let me know off list

What took you so long Pascal? =)

There is no way I would do it, but that is only because I have a
long commute, and put lots of miles on my “daily drivers” (120k on my
last one… 75k on my current one, a 2002 VW Jetta TDi)

But I would consider it if I were in your shoes. Too bad I can’t move
my office closer. =)–

And I don’t have anymore garage space!! Great car, and I’m sure
you’ll find a good home for it.

I’ve always said Pascal is the poster boy for regularly driving the

I have been using my E-Type as a daily driver, of late, because it
had become more dependable than my Toyota (watch for locusts and a
plague of frogs, coming soon). It is a wonderful car to drive.
Warning- I wouldn’t use it for 10-minute-to-work-commute. The
design of older engines is not so friendly for this style of
drive. That isn’t even enough time to warm up properly. IMHO.

Of course, anyone can take 30 minutes to drive a 10 minute commute,
I always used to do it through the local foothills…

It’s good to here than there are people than use their cars as originally
intended. I use my Series 1 1/2 2+2 as my daily driver - driving to and
of the car through Sydney summers, and the challenges required as the water
temperature rises to 90 deg and beyond when stuck in peak hour traffic
waiting to cross over the Harbour Bridge. Both colleagues, classic car
owning friends and the guy who has looked after my car on off for around 20
years (well before I owned it), finds this approach astounding.

To me, it makes practical and economic sense. Firstly, I find that if I am
using the E-Type on regular basis, I generally have less mechanical
problems. I own various older English cars, but Jaguars prove to ones that
require regular use. With proper care and maintenance, it is eminently
reliable. Secondly, as I park my car under cover at both ends, the car is
not exposed to the elements more that the hour or two it is on the road each
day. The engine and general car heat helps dissipate any water it may have
collected through rain, etc (although that is currently a rare occurrence as
almost 80% of the state is declared drought stricken !!!).

Finally, the capital cost (or should I say current market value as I have
definitely spent a truck load more than that in getting the car back to
original condition)is comparable or less than what I might otherwise spend
on a “modern” motor. Running costs are probably comparable and, as I look
after my car, depreciation if any is significantly less than I would have to
put up with on a modern vehicle. I also have a significant benefit in that
my insurance is considerably less than for an equivalent value modern car.

All in all (but for the heat), I am really pleased in being able to drive
the car regularly and gain full enjoyment from ownership - not to mention
that it is a great ‘ice-breaker’ and conversation starter with complete
strangers !!

Enjoy your motoring,
