I’ve noticed that with a rod down a spark plug hole, you can move the crank back-and-forth a few times and find TDC within about a degree if you are careful.
Close enough.

You don’t depend on the computer to tell you where the
trigger wheel is WRT TDC, you see where the trigger wheel
is with a timing light and then adjust that to ‘‘right on’’
by setting the computer to add whatever degrees you need to
the timing cycle – there is a specific parameter for
that. As Ray says after physically setting it carefully it
has always been right on when meas…

That’s right. The wonderful thing about this is that it is a set-it-and-forget-it deal. After twenty thousand miles or so, I changed the spark plugs and didn’t have to touch anything else.
Try that with points/cap/condenser/rotor! PHTTTTTTT.

Les, I think the issue is that there is no guarantee that the
bolts provide a precise concentric mounting. In my case I found
that I needed all of the clearance and in fact a slight
additional grinding in one slot to allow exact centering of the
trigger wheel as determined by a magnet dial indicator. If I
understand your shim position, it would eliminate this
adjustment. The bolts extend somewhat through the spacer and
any thread misalignment or bending of the bolt can create an
issue. I’m not sure how much problem would be created by a
slightly misaligned trigger wheel as long as it didn’t touch
the pickup, but my thought would be the less the better.

Agreed Lloyd, and I did mine with the engine out so it wasn’t a very
big deal, but, I wouldn’t want to have to do that with the engine in
the car, and this is the point i’m making, IF I DIDN’T HAVE TO (not
shouting here), and the shims remove that need.On Tue, Aug 23, 2016 at 1:05 PM, LLoyd (a rithmetician) soothsayer1@comcast.net wrote:

Yes, all true…I had my MSD on for seventeen years and never
had to touch the system at all…never had any problems…used
a Mallory dizzy…worked great.

I got Ray’s system for two reasons…1) it looks more elegant and
eliminates the need for a dizzy…2) support your local
sheriff…only one downer and that is it uses FMC parts
and I hate that company…can’t win 'em all I guess.On Tue, Aug 23, 2016 at 1:13 PM, LLoyd (a rithmetician) soothsayer1@comcast.net wrote:

Les,

Sorry for misunderstanding. Your invention has nothing to
do with adjusting the timing, instead it guarantees that
when you install the trigger wheel it’s always perfectly
centered on the pulley. When you set sensor clearance at
one spot, it is set everywhere without additional folderol.
Brilliant!

Les, I’m sorry I didn’t state this very well. It seems that
‘‘rollers’’ taking up the clearance between the bolts and the slots
in the trigger wheel will eliminate the possibility of concentric
adjustment. If the bolt pattern is fine at the trigger wheel this
is great, but if not it is now difficult to make the adjustment.
As I said, mine were not concentric and I needed the clearance to
be able to center the trigger wheel (not much but measurable).
A pilot on the wheel is theoretically a good idea but is probably
overkill as others have stated this is mostly a one time
adjustment.
All this contingent on my understanding of your mod.–

Jerry,
Not a poblem, but of course it has nothing to do with SETTING the
timing, but has everything to do with the ease and consistency of
moving the wheel to set the timing. That’s all. I just felt/feel
that there was play in the system that needed to be eliminated, so
that’s what I did.On Tue, Aug 23, 2016 at 1:58 PM, mouton jerry@moutons.org wrote:

Gary,
If the bolt pattern is off then you have a point and I will find that
out. However, all the bolts with shims on, went back on fine, without
force, and the trigger wheel rotates with just about zero chance of
moving off center. Now, if the trigger wheel was made with the slots
not being concentric, well, then we have a problem but I’m thinking
that Ray made these using a CAD operated machine so all should be
well.On Tue, Aug 23, 2016 at 2:39 PM, gbrinker gbrinker@parrottalk.com wrote:

Les,

If you set the trigger wheel correctly, when the engine is
idling WITH THE MEGAJOLT DISCONNECTED, timing will be exactly
10BTDC. Beyond the first couple of times I did it, I never
even bothered checking with a timing light, because the visual
adjustment always put it within a very small fraction of a
degree.–
The original message included these comments:

Ray, I assume you set the system for 10D BTDC as the initial baseline?
