[E-Type] Engine noise

In reply to a message from Eric MaLossi sent Fri 23 Apr 2004:

Eric,

It usually sinks in 1/4’’ max when it fails, so I use a needle nose
pliers against the body to pry it back out. There’s more control
over the pull that way.

You say that you ‘‘pull’’ the thing back into the correct position. The
last time this happened to me, I ended up having to take the back off
and then push it back into place which was a real pain. How does one go
about pulling it out?

Did you use an incompressible gasket? Can’t remember. Thought you
were using doubles with a plate. Even a peelable multi-thickness
solid can deform slightly.

Was really only suggesting that you can make all the calculations
you like (and I’m sure you’ll be pretty darn close). However,
empirically, when you’re talking about irregular forms,
compressible materials and cleaned pistons/chambers your CR is what
it measures out at, not what you calculate it to be, even if
they’re as near as makes no difference. just a view.

Having said that, empirically, I’d also have to admit that if your
engine runs strong and healthy, who cares what the precise number
is? :-)–

Peter,
The head gasket is all steel, so not particularly
compressible. At most, I might be off by 0.01:1 or so, hardly
significant.–
