[E-Type] Engine Serial # on a 68 2+2

Hi All,

the snow is starting to go & I have a few things I want to
tackle if I can. I want to go to electronic ignition or
Ray;s EDIS. But have some questions. The engine serial # on
my 68 2+2 is 7E8263-9 & the car # is 1E78779

Can anyone tell if this is the right engine for this car?
The reason I ask is that I have tripple SU’s in the car, but
there are 2 choke cables coming from the firewall which
seems to be from the strombergs that were probably original
to the car.
I am trying to figure out if EDIS will work with my setup or
of pertronix is the way to go. Any pointers or suggestions
will help

thanks & wish me luck !

Hi,

yes, that engine is from an earlier SWB car, can’t tell if
it would have been a FHC or OTS but surely that does not
matter. It’s a normal S1 4.2L E-type engine number.

All 2+2 engine numbers (in Series 1 and 1.5) start 7E5XXXX-X
and thus have one digit more. I don’t know why, but perhaps
as the extension to the gearbox or automatic transmission
was only to be used for the LWB cars which had their own
assembly line they made this so they would not accidentally
have the wrong powertrain on the wrong assembly line…

Cheers,

Hi Marios, unfortunately the engine number you have is not
original. Your car was built on 23rd May 1968, Maroon paint,
Black trim, original owner in San Jose 4th June 1968.
Hope this helps, omnipeta.–

Your car is on XKE Data and apparently had the correct engine at
the time.

Hi,

just to be clear. The 7E8263-9 is stamped on the head. I am
not concerned really if this is the original engine. can I
use an EDIS in here or should I go pertronix. Does it
matter? Pitfalls, issues? This is new territory for me, but
am willing to learn .

Thanks again

All the modern electronic replacements offer is to replace the original
points with various forms of electronic pickup. The advantages are set
it once and forget it. The dwell doesn’t change due to the rubbing
block wearing because there isn’t one.

Besides EDIS, there are others such as the Crane XR-700 which I have on
my OTS. It uses a photo diode and detector and a plastic shutter wheel
in the distributor and a small electronic box to drive the coil.

The disadvantage of any replacement that relies on the original
distributor is they can’t fix wear problems in the distributor like a
wobbly shaft or worn out advance mechanism.

The Ford EDIS uses a toothed wheel mounted on the damper and a magnetic
pickup which “reads” the teeth position. That is fed to an electronic
box and a module which drives the coil pack in this case. The advantage
of EDIS is the advance curve is derived electronically and programmable
so you can tweak it for performance or economy or whatever.

I once had a CD type system in my Datsun that just used the points to
trigger it. Because the current through the points was very much
reduced, the points lasted for well over 50,000 miles. Eventually the
rubbing block wore out.

It all depends on your level of desire and what’s in your wallet. Even
the original points versions were used for decades but they need
occasional maintenance and replacement.

But the electronic systems like EDIS are “cool” so it increases your
bragging rights with the bonnet up. Sort of like putting triple SU’s on
a Stromberg car or even polishing them like a recent thread.

Thanks everyone. Now I need to get in touch with Ray Livingson.
Anyone have a # for him or is that not allowed here?

By looking at nearby numbers on xkedata.com it would not appear to be
original, however the only way you will know for certain is to get the
JHT certificate. FWIW my car is a Jan '67 build, its engine # is
7E12032-9. Check your numbers carefully the stampings are not always
good and are easily misread. Also if the E is actually an R that
makes it an S2 motor. And good luck

In the long run…you’ll be happier with EDIS.
