[E-Type] Exhaust pipes 2+2

Hi — I’ve got two bad pipes. One is the siamesed pipe from the
downpipes to the mufflers, the other is from the rear of the
muffler to the resinator pipe. I probable can have a local custom
bending shop fabricate the back one. Its the front one that could
be the little bugger. Its an auto so the routing must go around the
trans sump. I’ve found this available in stainless but was
wondering if there are any sources that can supply it in the
regular steel. I’ve done a quick run though most of the regulars
sites with no luck. Any ideas?

Once again thanks in advance—John–

I replaced my system maybe 3 yrs ago. Got it from Welsh. Can’t remember the
cost but it is in mild steel.

If you get all or part of the system custom made, I would suggest trying to
add another 6 inches extension so the resonators stick out further. This
will help eliminate, or at least minimize, any exhaust fumes from being
sucked back into the car. I added a couple of 6 inch chrome extensions to
the resonators and it helps a lot. It looks ok too and in fact it could
probably do with another couple of inches extension to ensure the gases get
away from the low pressure area at the rear of the car.

This brings up a sore subject with me. I just replaced a set of Walker
mufflers after 1 1/2 years of moderate use. When manufactured, a steel bar
is laid across the top of both mufflers and then welded to each–(for
stability, I assume). Where the two are welded, the weld broke exposing a
large gap in the mufflers and sounding like a tractor.

I called the well known usual suspect and, you guessed it, the FIRST thing
out of their mouth was – " we didn’t weld it–the manufacturer did".
After protesting a bit, they “promised” me to discuss it and get back to me
to see if an adjustment could be made. We will see.

Overall—I think the Walker system is poor. The pipes are so soft that
they collapse with not too much tightening causing a squeeze gap allowing
air leaks.

Another idea that might be useful…many many years ago, back in the
UK, we used to get the silencers (mufflers) wrapped in stainless steel
before installation on the car. This was very cost effective and as far as
I can recall, we never had one of these fail. Might be something worth
considering on our cars??

Tom, this is exactly what happen on the Walker set I had. I chased that
problem for months trying to figure out what that awful noise was. The strap
across the TOP of the muffler next to the bottom of the car acted like a
telegraph key, exhaus gas out, spring steel down, what a pain. When I
replaced the mufflers and discovered the problem, I replaced with 24"X3"
Cherry Bombs and have been happy since, great growl !
