[E-Type] Festive Christmas quiz

Are there ANY parts on a s3 which are common to a s1 car?

I can’t think of any:- perhaps maybe the Otter switch or the boot
latch, handbrake lever, handbrake parallelogram thingy on the IRS
or a few internal bits in the differential?

kind regards
Marek–

There are many parts that aren’t common to all S1 cars so
it depends on your frame of reference.

Plenty of parts would fit but not be right - such as boot
lid or hatch which are drilled for V12 badges as a minimum
and of course the hatch has a large vent.

I would think rear splined hubs, door and quarter-light
frames and glass same as all 2+2s? Rear glass, seal and
trim. Boot boards ditto although the last US V12 2+2s had a
fixed rear seat squab. Rear seat squab and cushion would
fit but are perforated on S3. Cant rails, headliner
biscuit? Rear interior lamp. pedal box and levers same as
late S1, master cylinder ditto? Door handles, Plastic
column switch cover, large column adjuster nut, Headlamps,
stop lamp switch, transmission mount plate, filler cap,
filler lid after Oct 62. Glove box and parcel shelves same
as S1 2+2. Handbrake lever is very different from any S1.
Compensator mech yes. Hand brake calipers too. Transmission
cover and tail housing same on all LWB Es, together with
most gearbox parts but not the cast-iron case.–

How about the roof panel. Same on all 2+2’s and FHC’s, roadster
bootlid springs, boot lid release cable (not early 3.8) Door lock
links, sill strengtheners, rear panel support (roadster, behind
rear interior light). Bonnet locks (after early 3.8). Bonnet rear
chrome? bonnet chrome strips and brass clips. Fuel tank filler
hose. Radius arms, and bushes? Fuel tank filler box, drive shaft
UJ’s? 2+2 propshaft? Roadster bootlid, (they arrive new undrilled),
door hinge tapered head bolts, steering column rubber boot and
chrome securing surround, bonnet electrical plug and socket, bumper
rubbers?( not series 2) S1 2+2 door and B post chromes, later S1
gear levers? and a whole bucketfull of standard nuts, bolts and

FHC roof panel is very different from V12. All LWB panels
are more curved than S1&2 FHC.

Bonnet chromes different too (shorter on S2&3).

Radius arms and bushes was a good catch and the roadster
interior light and panel. Many door mechanicals different
for longer doors / later locks.–

G’Day Marek,
Almost certainly (just guessing, do not have an S 111) lots of fasteners,
screws, washers (full range of types), nuts and bolts, spacers, drippy runny
black paint, Cheney hose (and other styles on thin hose) clamps, depending
on market some SU parts, some light bulbs in instruments/external
lights/interior lights, some fuses, probably more would come to mind if I
put in some research in S 1 parts book diagrams. If as delivered by dealer
oils, coolant, brake fluids, fuel etc.

For those lucky enough to have one of each the big nut holding on the
steering wheel. Yes I know, an old well used story  .

I know the Series III 2+2 doors will fit a Series II so
maybe they will also fit a Series I 2+2. latches might be
different though. I guess they are not common though since
the Series II had the side intrusion beams.

How about the rear quarter glass? and the rear hatch
glass?

For that matter I’d guess the body shell, with the
exception of the taillight area, shares a lot of parts from
Series I and III when talking about the 2+2 shell.–

I’ll take

boot lid
glove box internals
irs cage mounts
splined hubs
interior lamp cover
radius arms and bushes
fuel filler box
bonnet plug

Nuts and bolts or hose clamps is just scraping the barrel so no you
can’t have trivia, nor can you subdivide the s1 cars as they kept
morphing and pick and choose (although excluding bonnet latches -
only after o.b.l. - seems harsh).

On that basis, 2+2 door/window/rear parts may scrape through but
the 2+2 wasn’t in the original model range, correct if if I’m
wrong, was it?

I’m not sure about the headlight either - I have a friend worked
for Lucas at the time and he swears that the ‘‘PL’’ stood for ‘‘Posh
Lamp’’. In any case, it’s different from the traditonal 7’’ sealed
beam.

The hole in the wallet is also wrong - this was never part of a car
and some may even make a tidy profit if they put it in a barn, let
it decay and then go to ebait.

I’m surprised no wags came up with ‘‘rust’’. Hard to argue with that
one. It’s a longer list than I thought, but still pretty short.

kind regards

There was a Series I 2+2. And since the eEntire Series III
was built at 2+2 dimensions wouldn’t one need to discuss
the 2+2 for any kind of valid comparison.–

In reply to a message from John Walker sent Wed 17 Dec 2014:

My question implicitly was for the beginning and end of production,
i.e. a 1974 car versus an early 1962 car. (I am assuming that the
first few obl cars were maybe, with the benefit of
hindsight, ‘‘exceptions’’.) It is my impression that a 2+2 didn’t
happen until a bit later and that later still, the s1 specification
was a completely moving target, so take a slightly more restrictive
interpretation to the question, but not wholly so.

There was a s1 2+2, so it is fair game.
It’s still a small list, even with lwb 2+2 parts included.

kind regards

Headlight main beam dip switch, outer sills handbrake
micro switch and handbrake cable(2+2). I say again door
chromes for 2+2. Clutch and brake reservoir bottles and
fixing brackets (4.2). Front windscreen top chrome, outer
door handles, fuel flap hinge, rear quarterlight clamps?,
rear door stay (not 3.8). Rear part of dash top plus
cover.

Still think roof panel as I have fitted a s3 to a s1 to
get rid of a glass sunroof. Sill strengtheners at air
filter and battery area, plus battery bracket.

Demist tubes, 2+2 drop glass and glass frames, dash grab
handle and fixings, roadster A post caps and centre chrome
receiver. Bonnet harness? Bonnet hinges and top hats plus
poly bushes. Dash pivot bolts, fibre washers and polly
bushes. Bonnet locating pins, rubbers and brackets plus
receivers, bonnet landing rubber. Door skins and sill
chromes and fixing clips, headlining rear gripper (2+2).
Fuel tank sump and drain? That’s me I am done.–

And dash side chromes plus triangular plastic covers in
the same area and wiring plastic ties and bonnet centre
secondary lock. That’s it, I am out.

Possibly top and bottom front ball joints, that’s
definetly it… Other than diff cage lower plate and some
inner rear wishbone lower fulcrum bits

But not the brake light switch previously mentioned ( V12
mechanical, all others hydraulic) nor window winder mech’
