[E-Type] Fifty Years of Ownership

A friend of mine informed me today that this was the 49th
anniversary of the day he picked up his 1964 Golden Sand
E-type Coupe at the Jaguar Dealership in Montreal Canada.
The car was just a little over a year old when he
purchased it. It was restored around 2004 and is as
beautiful today as it was in 1965. Just wondered how many
on the forum or others whom you may know have owned their
E-type for 50 years or will likely achieve that amazing
milestone.

43 years and counting. Purchased my '70 OTS in 1970 from
original owner who had bought it for his wife. She found the
clutch ‘‘too stiff’’ and the car lacking in trunk space. I
became acquainted with the couple through a mutual friend who
knew that I had an interest in upgrading my ride–a '69 MGB–
and told me of the E’s availability. The deal was struck and
I’ve owned ‘‘Johnny’’ ever since. All of this happened in LA,
where I had been living for only a few years on a work
assignment. The year following the purchase, I returned to
Denver, where the car served as my daily driver for many more
years before another work move took me to Salt Lake, where an
assigned company car allowed the E to be saved for weekend
ski jaunts up the cottonwood canyons. Ultimately the family
left the mountain west, with Jag on trailer headed to Indy,
and later, Louisville KY, where I undertook–in '09–a
restoration. Finished it last year (2012). It’s primary
purpose these days is to transport me to a golf course–round
trip 10 miles–and to go to occasional local car shows. In
other words, it’s a lot like the many retired race horses
that reside in our area.–

I have owned my 67 E-Type OTS form day one and it is still as
thrilling as the fist time I sat in it as a 20 yr. old kid !!!
I have maintained it myself for the last 46 years and since the
original Opalesent Silver Blue paint faded over the years,I had it
refinished in the same color in 2006. At that time I also replaced
all the rubber parts.
She looks better than when I took delivery in 1967 …
As you all know the sides of the E-Type were a tad bit wavie in
areas as delivered from the factory. Mine is now straighter and I f
has more product (paint) on it now in addition to ‘‘clearcoating’’,
which was not offered back in the day !!!
Should be good for another 46 years …–

I know of some cars that are one owner from new. Mine has had
at least 8 registered owners, many of whom have long departed
this earth. However I have recently discovered one PO’s
address. I intend to re-acquaint them with the car this
summer. I might even find out a little more about the car.

Dad traded in his '65 BRG FHC in on a '69 silver FHC about 44 years
ago. I think he had about 150,000 miles on the '65 as he drove
alot for his job.

The '69 saw 120,000 miles before he changed jobs. About twenty
years ago he and I pulled the engine (out the top) to get the
engine refreshed. I helped put it back together, and we both drove
it a little, but it needed alot of attention. Ten years ago he
gave me the '69 with a thick layer of dust and a lot of new spare
parts.

It now runs like a top. I have replaced alot of rubber parts and
rebuilt many other parts. Before I start a project (or sometimes
in the middle), I search this forum for tips and photos. I have to
thank Jag-lovers contributors for lots of help.

My dad is now 87 and going stong. My goal is to buy new wheels and
tires this summer so I can drive the 200 miles to his house and let
him drive.–

I bought my 1970 E roadster in November 1972, with less than
40,000 miles on the clock. It now has 193,000 + miles, not
counting the two years the speedometer cable was broken.
I’ve got ten more years to go, if I last that long.–

I also have 7 more years to go with my 70 OTS. I bought it with 115 miles
on the clock in Dec 70 when I was 23. Sold it in '76 to a co-worker who
wrecked it 2 months afterwards. He lacked insurance and sold it then. We
thought its fate was to be a parts car. Instead, I bought it back off eBay
in 2005 (Thanks, PaulS) and found S1 and S1.25 parts on it! As the 1st and
6th owner I’ll probably need another 7 years to get it the way I want it.

I bought my '71 FHC on Jan. 22, 2013 so I’ve got a little
under 49 years and 10 months to go to reach 50 years.

But I also have an XK120 OTS that I bought in September of
1957 with about 30K on the clock. It was my daily driver
for about 7 years- it even served as my ride for my first
date with the woman who became my wife. But she had a brand
new VW Beetle when we married so the 120 got semi-retired
and eventually neglected while children, jobs and moves
intervened. I started restoring it in 1999 and it’s
‘‘finished’’ now so needing another (much, much smaller)
project I bought the E-Type- the only other car that ever
grabbed my attention the way the 120 did.

Blown away once again. I will never cease to be amazed by the

to share that knowledge, tour, use, rallying…on this board.

Most of the replies have been for Series I and II E-Types – no other way to get close to 50 years of ownership.

Mine is a 72 Series III purchased in 1980 (car was 8 years old – I was 27 years old) with 29,000 miles on it. Owned it ever since – so 2013 - 1980 = (only) 33 years.

Can’t be but a small handful of Series III owners who can lay claim to more than 33 of straight oownership

Same story for me Peter. Father took delivery June 1968. He
taught me how to drive a stick in it in the mid 70’s. He
didn’t know a Phillips head from vice grips and he couldn’t
afford the shop rates so car needed some work when he passed
away in 1992 and I bought my brother’s share out. I did
significant work via a Haynes manual and extensive over the
phone help from sales people at many of ‘the usuals’. Some
of the names have changed though.

20 years later, and after raising some kids, I’m into a full
restore with the help of my son. My goal is to have my son
invest some sweat, a few busted knuckles and learn to love
the car. He’s well on his way. I guess you could say it has
become an heirloom!

I still can’t believe the resources and the quality of the
expertise to be found on the web and especially on this
forum. The sages here are surely helping to keep these great
cars on the road and alive for the next generation.–

enjoyed reading the posts from from some of our younger

purchased my ‘68 OTS a mere 10 years ago ,much later in

will be together for 30 more years. And, unfortunately my
son is 6’ 4’’ tall so you know how well he fits in an E-

I hope all of you will continue to enjoy these magnificent

Well—my brother-in-law is 6’4" and years ago had an MGA-----he was and is kinda skinny, so he looked funny with his skinny head above the windshield—but, he fit in it----now–not sure I ever saw him in it with the top up.

I’m only 6’, and with the top up on the E my head wants to scrape the top. But, I do know some others here over 6 who somehow fit the E—so tell you son not to give up:)
