[E-Type] Five-minute Strangleberg fix?

In reply to a message from BTR sent Tue 3 Jul 2012:

Hello Folks,

Thanks to for all the help. It is a very informatice

discussion. I had put new bushings in the secondary
butterflies when I rebuilt the manifold and carbs so the
shafts were tight enough that they stay in the open position
once the springs are removed. I just disconnected all the
linkages and springs as to make it a little neater. The
improvement in performance off the line was not subtle. I
wonder triples would make a noticeable difference?

I know the great difference when removing the secondares. I did mine…
But… you will probably no notice any difference by adding tripples, the engine can take in only so much air at a time.

In case newcomers don’t recognise this 15 month-old topic
(threads do not fully reconstruct after a certain time
gap), here is the topic Wes is referring to:

I’m not sure I would rely on stiff bushing to hold a pair
of secondaries wide open for ever, but so far so good for
Wes, I guess. If they everdrop or get sucked shut they
will almost immobilise the car so I prefer jamming them
open with the detched linkage, or removal altogether -
which takes much more than five minutes but is certainly
worthwhile.

Don’t think so Nick, My V12 doesn’t have the bypass they are
referring to and I doubt that yours does. They are referring
to the set of secondary throttles that was part of the
emissions set up on some of the 4.2 engines.
That being said, there are lots of things that can be done to
our V12’s that will improve their performance. For details
search the web site and consider Kirby Palms downloadable
book on the XJS ‘‘XJS, Experience in a Book’’, has a great deal
of information on the early V12 engine.

If you read the thread it is about jamming open secondary
throttles. If you can find 'em you can jam 'em, but since
there is no such car as a V12 with secondary throttles,
jamming them open is clearly not on the agenda…

Nor is it necessary, since two 1.75’’ carbs flow enough air
for each 2.65L six-cylinder bank in a V12 road car. AFAIK
even the V12 SU conversions also use 1.75’’ instruments
(HIF6?)

I don’t know whether you have to keep all the emissions gear on
your strombergs, but if not then consider dispensing with it.

I had mine tuned by someone who knew a bit about it and he blocked
off the bimetallic bypass thing. Apparently it is only used to
reduce emissions on overrun,(I’ll probably be shot down over this,
but its what he said)

He also removed the vacuum connection to the distributor, as this
was also only an emissions reducing thing as well,(ducking as I say
this)

So lets hear what the others think.–

If your distributer is the “vacuum retard” type (mine was) it as the worst advance curve in the world. Block it off. It causes overheating at idle. Just gettng rid of that distributer an relplacing it with anything is an improvement.

I agree about replacing the distributor. If you can get hold of
the later CEI ignition module and distributor from a later 12
cylinder engine, and dump the Opus setup, then your life will be
much easier.

Hot and cold starting is improved, and reliability increased.–

Good afternoon. I wanted to ask a questions about the 5 min
fix. I tried this today on my 1969 XKE 2+2 and when I flipped
BD around and pinned it against the manifold, when I stated
the car my RPMs shot up to around 1700 vs my normal 700… is
that what is supposed to happen? What am I missing or doing

Something’s not right.

The fix has zero effect on idle. Possibly dislodged a
setting somewhere? The idle air should be controlled by
the main throttle plate and other settings, regardless of
whether you have the secondaries jammed open or not.

Let us know how you get on.

I did this mod. No effect on idle. Much lower pedal effort & more
driveable.

I bet you have a throttle return issue. The secondaries have hefty
return springs. Without these springs you are depending on the
springs at the carbs (& is there one on the pedal?) to retract all
the linkage. I went through my throttle likage (LHD),
disassembled, cleaned, and greased each ball joint and bellcrank
pivot.

Maybe just squirt WD40 on the pivots & cycle by hand. The throttle
needs to snap closed fast and firm. (if not you can become a
passenger and fate the driver.)

Keep us posted.–

Probably close to 30 years ago Milford decided to have a car show in
conjunction with their annual home tour and we were invited to bring
our freshly restored 69 OTS. There were “tons” of people looking at
the cars and as most of them were not “car people” , all too many were
very careless about belt buckles, chain necklaces etc that you didn’t
dare leave your car, not a fun day. Is that super ice cream shop still
just off of main street?
