[E-Type] Fixing broken wire wheel spokes

My wheels have a few broken spokes and a few spokes that do not “ting”
when tapped with a piece of metal. I would plan to replace the broken
ones and tighten the loose ones being sure to tighten until they “ting”
the same as the others then tapped with a piece of metal. Thus I ask the
list for advice.

  1. Is this ok to do?

  2. Where can I buy a wrench to do this??

Thanks Dennis 69 OTS

Not unless you know the proper torque to put on them and have a jig for
alignment. Good way to get wobbly wheels. Same principal as bicycle
wheels. You can also get the wheel out of round. You are better off
sending it to X.K’s. Unlimited or Dan Mooney for repair.

Snap On. Use a crowfoot on an inch pound torque wrench.>

Hi Dennis, I just looked at my “Complete Official Jaguar “E”” by R. Bentley
and it gives fairly detailed instructions about trueing and replacing spokes
in wire wheels. It does not look like a problem provided reasoneable care
is taken. It is the same procedure as doing bicycle wheels which are pretty
easy. I can send a copy of the instructions if you need them. What part of
British Columbia are you in? I am in Sidney.

if more than 4 spokes are broken or not holding their torque, I would
just relace the wheel. Certainly don’t drive it at highway speeds that
way.
