[E-Type] Follow up, Series 3 Fans

Thank you to all who responded especially Terry L. and Ole.
Made it home yesterday fine on one fan with ambient temps of
100F+. Have yet to complete the post mortum however it looks
like one fan died and the AC fan switch rather than the AC fan
switch relay. Will be taking those relays apart and cleaning
them before she goes out again and will be looking for the fan
switch from NAPA that has been listed as a replacement.

I really hate to post this after reading of Toms 8000mile+
trip with no problems but I had another fuel pump go out on
the way back to the motel in Walla Walla after the Saturday
car show, can you believe it Mike? This was the one I put in
on the WTol in Big Spring, Texas last spring. I was fortunate
in that I had the rebuilt SU in place and just had to move the
lines and wires back to the SU pump, still it was hard to see
with sweat dripping in my eyes. The first pump lasted 40 years
but then it’s one after the other, I think this is the fourth
pump.

After I get the fans sorted, going to follow the advice of the
forum and put in the VW fans and store the originals in a nice
cool place for some future caretaker, I’m going to plumb an
aftermarket pump in line with the Su so that all I have to do
is switch the leads.

Thanks again to everyone who helped, if any one is interested
they can do a google search for Idaho British Car Club and
find the photos on the Facebook link.

Cheers,
Lynn–

Lynn,

If you go with the VW fan system, you should also purchase and
install the locking connectors rather than rely on the spade
terminals on the motors. On multiple occasions, one or the other
fan quit on me, and a connector was found to be shaken loose. The
same thing has happened on another E-Type I’m familiar with.

Another improvement you might want to consider if you don’t mind
further departure from originality is the installation of rivet
nuts on the shroud for attachment of the fan motor brackets. It
can be a great time and knuckle skin saver, especially when you
don’t have to retrieve dropped nuts and washers from between the
shroud and the radiator.–

Morning Don,
Thank you, excellent ideas, will go shopping for rivets today.
Wonder if OReily’s/Autozone would have the locking connectors?
Fans are out for delivery according to the tracking web site
so should get them today. Installed the NAPA AC Fan switch
yesterday and it worked great. Looks stock except it turns
through 90 degrees as opposed to the OEM turning through 270.
Cheers,
Lynn
Forgive my shaky memory, we met you in San Antonio on the WTol
didn’t we?–

Lynn,

You are correct. We caught up with you and the WTOL at Mission San
Jose, and enjoyed a great day and a half of touring with you all.

I purchased the two fan motor connectors and 3 leads (Each lead
could be cut into 2 pieces to get the required 6.) at the local VW
dealer, but I would have tried OReilys/Autozone if I had thought
of doing so. The dealer had to special order them.

The rivet nuts require slight enlargement of the shroud holes in
order to use the original screw size; but I was just able to work
through all the obstacles without having to do any major component
removal for access. Just be careful not to put a drill through the
radiator. A block on the bit can help prevent that. The fan
brackets are just one of several places on the E-Type where captive
nuts can really help improve quality of life.

Best regards,–

Hi Don,
I thought so, for those who don’t know, Don has a Very Nice S3
2+2 that he has installed fuel injection on. A beautiful car!
Thank you so much for the excellent ideas. I have one
(Drivers side) fan mounted and the rivnuts were an outstanding
idea. I don’t think that it would be possible to get the
nylocks on the bolts with the new 6 bladed fan, I could work
around the 4 blade OEM fan through the gaps but the 6
blade???
I’ll check at ORiely’s and see if they have the motor
connectors or something that would work, barring that I’ll
just have to find some other way to secure the connections.

I am sweating the hole in front of the alternator, not going
to be able to get the drill in there, the others on the
passenger side should be ‘easy’ but that lower inside one
looks to put up a fight.

Thanks again Don, appreciate the help!

Kind regards,
Lynn–
