[E-Type] Gas Tank Sump/Plug

The sump on my car looks to be one piece. The manual shows two
pieces, a sump for the fuel intake and a drain plug.
What say you who have taken it off. Thanks!

Bob, The sump plugs seem to have come in the two different configurations that
you mentioned. I have no idea when the change ocurred.

I think the nut on the bottom of the sump throws folks off and they
try that first(myself included). I don’t know what that nut is for.
(looks like its welded on ?) Just grab the sump itself with a strap
wrench or small oil filter wrench and turn counterclockwise. Be
sure to put anti-seize on the threads when you put it back in…and
use a new rubber seal if my memory serves me.

i.e. And don’t forget to put a bucket underneath to catch any
remaining gas when you unscrew.–

Mike, I agree. It looks like the nut is part of the sump. Will try
your suggestion. Cheers!–

I use to take the entire sump off, but then one day “discovered” that the
nut on the bottom was really a bolt that unscrews, drains the tank and no
new gasket is needed.

Mike,I’ve been going to ask you what you used for a gasket.
Mine is one piece sump and I tried several different gaskets
but always had, not exactly a leak but it was always a petrol
stain around the top thread. Friend of mine is the manager of
Loctite and he gave me some 515 to use on the thread. Sealed
it perfectly. 517 is also good.

Hi Bill,

You can buy new sump washers from SNG.

When I cleaned my tank out a couple of years ago I also took the
opportunity to shorten the intake pipe in the sump by about an
inch. This lifts it clear of the crud that inevitably builds up in
the sump and so avoids early blockages ocurring.

Best of luck.

Thanks Jeff but since I found the loctite, that’s what I’ll

any petrol gasket. I don’t work for loctite or have any
shares in it either, just know the local manager.–

Hi Bill, there is a gasket, rubber, especialy for that sump to tank
sealing. The usuals have them and if you have a hard time getting one or
whatever, let me know and I’ll get one and send it to you. Cost ya a smile
and a cold beer if I ever make it to OZ.

Could anyone with a vented aluminum 8-finger style gas filler cap please
tell me what size the venting hole is (1/64" maybe?) and where it exits on
the back side of the cap? I bought a nice old cap off e-bay only to find
that it was non-vented upon receipt and I wish to convert it. I’ve seen
pictures and clearly the vent hole is off center, but I cannot determine if
the hole is through the thicker part of the cap where the screwed on steel
locking tab bar part of the cap attaches or just though the thinnest part of
the cap, near where the raised “V” is located.

Thanks in advance.

Craig, did you get an answer to your question, or picture? If not let me
know and I’ll send a picture of the two caps I’ve got.

The hole is through the thick part of the cap where the V points.
I don’t know the size of the hole because it is smaller than any

Craig - This is late but checked my OEM 8 finger cap and the
vent hole is 1/16’’ and is slightly off dead center to exit
through one leg of the four finger inside casting that the
1/2’’ x 1 3/4’’ bracket that fits into the tank pipe slot
screws into. The bracket is held on to the casting by a
phillips head screw that affords about 1/16’’ of venting
space between the bracket and the vent exit hole. Advise if
you need a picture.
