[E-Type] Gears & Sprockets

How does one determine whether or not the timing gears and
sprockets need to be replaced? There is little mention in
the factory manual. I can’t find anything definitive, in
other books…

The teeth in the E type look similar to the teeth of an
80,000 mile XJ6…

I would expect the chain to wear much earlier than the sprockets.
The chain is a duples 3/8 inch pitch, so counting off 10 or 20
links and measuring between them will tell you how much wear or
stretch there is. A close inspection of the sprockets will reveal
any ‘hooking’ from roller wear. Any appreciable lengthening of the
chain or ‘hooking’ in a sprocket tooth should dictate replacement.–

Hooking… heh?

So the tooth would look hooked?
Now I know what to look for…
I bought new chains. As I looked more closely at them
I see they are Made in India…Swell!

Abner,
The tips of the sprocket teeth bend away from the direction of
travel as they ‘‘push’’ the chain. If you sight from the center of
the sprocket out radially, the tip of the tooth would be ‘‘bent’’ to
one side or the other.

It’s not much fun to have to go back in to the timing case in 5-20K
miles because of noise (or worse). The pro’s replace sprockets as a
matter of course in a hi mileage rebuild.–
