When the odd Etype happens by on the street and it
doesn’t sound right to me, I’m disappointed. I am
not so shaken by chrome that’s less than perfect or
paint that’s lost it’s luster…but it has to sound
right…Have a look at this article, amazing!

That sounds about right!

I wasn’t pleased with the sound of my S2 OTS so I replaced the resonators with Ansa resonators. That gave it the aggresive “grumble” without being harsh or obnoxious.

Same thing on my Datsun Z cars. They came with the “Hoover Suck-O-Matic” ™ exhaust sound that sounded like a clogged vacuum cleaner hose. I went with 2 inch pipes and a different resonator on them as well.

A sports car has to sound sporty. Why do you think there is such an aftermarket for trash can sized megaphones on rice-rockets?

I’ll have to pull it out of the garage this weekend and take some photos.

The Ansa resonators are no longer made. I got a set when Coventry West
had a few NOS ones that they put on eBay a couple of years ago.

They break out into two pairs of pipes so it looks pretty impressive.

Guys,
I have the exhaust off of my E. The mufflers are going, replaced by
straight pipes. The resonators will be replaced by Supertrapps.
Very un - concours like. My own lttle hot rod.

We’ll see how it sounds in the spring.

When I replaced the duel muffler setup on my car I was looking for something
with just a little more “growl” and installed duel “cherry bombs” 24" X 3"
into the exhaust system with the resonators at the rear. This has produced a
nice growl at idle and at speed just enough sound to be right.

In reply to a message from Michael sent Sat 28 Jan 2006:

A zillion years ago I had to replace the resonators as they were
rusting out. Sawed off the tailpipe portion and welded straight
exhaust tubing to match the resonator length. Added a cross-member
to each to bolt to ‘‘you know where’’, painted those portions flat
black, installed them and…wow! A snarly beast.

Nonetheless, I’m back to the original system, albeit SS. It sounds
original.

Dave , I have a set of the 24" stainless Super Trapps on my 64 and
the sound can be anything that you want. As I recall they came with 6
discs and I ended up using the maximum of 12. At the present time I’m
using the open " off road only" end caps and with no mufflers it’s a
little? loud but sounds beautiful! The only problem with ST’s is that
that do tend to throw crap on the license plate area unless they
stick out behind the car further then I care for,

interesting article…

i know i have the right sound since i’ve had people and mechanics commenting
on how nice my V12 sound… and also other V12 owners trying to copy that
sound… hmmm… ginger …

it’s not just exhaust, but intake too. removing the stock trumpet changed
the way the car sounded.

sound is so important… i couldn’t drive a car that doens’t sound right.
when i drive on the road and happen to follow a ferrari or Maserati or
lamborghini, i always roll down the windows and turn off the radio. on the
other hand, following some trash can exhaust rice burner i crank up the
stereo!

the worst sounding car i ever heard had to be mazda rotary RX7 with modified
exhaust. sounded like a million angry mosquitoes being chased by a million
p…off bees!

If you like British sound tracks, you guys should hear my
Healey at 4000 rpm. My BJ8 has a period Monza free flow
exhaust fitted (sadly not avail anymore). This car
positively barks. In fact I never start the car before 9
a.m. in my neighborhood. Going through a tunnel in third
gear is one of life’s great joys - also the reason I’ll
probably need a hearing aide in a year or so :>)

Pascal,
You’re SO right about sound. It’s the return on investment of
risking a speeding ticket. I’ll have the ‘‘holy grail’’ for S-2
owners (3xSU’s)this spring, but I’ve worked tirelessly on obtaining
and refinishing a ‘‘stock’’ filter system (trumpets, plenum etc).

Maybe I should have put 3 K&N’s on, and enjoyed the hissing and
honking?

Nah, I won’t go there~~~

In reply to a message from Pascal Gademer sent Sat 28 Jan 2006:

Interesting topic. The ‘‘correct’’ sound is, to me, a vital
component of a car’s charisma. IMHO, a current example of
disapponiting auto acoustical appeal is the recent Corvette;
superior performance but fire it up (turn it on is more like it)
and… ho-hum. Mostly fan noise. On the other hand, my old '66
327/350 Corvette had the sound to go with the rest of the package.

I keep a CD of a D-Type making the rounds at Goodwood in one of the
PCs CD trays in order to have ready access whenever I am in need of
a flat-out-XK-engine sound fix.–

In reply to a message from Rowdy III sent Sat 28 Jan 2006:

Ok, I for one hate the underhood sound of a lot of current
engines, most notably of the Japanese variety. The new Z-car
has the starter motor wiht a primary sound frequency around,
oh 7,000 hz coupled wiht that incessant, rapid tsk, tsk tsk
tsk tsk of the injection system. Call me old-fashioned, but
even if they are nowhere near the efficiency of EFI, I STILL
like the sound of carbs opening up. The tsk,tsk tsk of
injection just getting much faster doesn’t do it for me.
Must be a primordial thing in the genes.

I love the growl! I just removed the rusting resonators from my '68
2+2, installed Thrush glaspacks, made up two tail pipes, welded a
crossmember at the top (near the bumper end) and another at the
base for the mounting bushing, and painted the pipes flat black. I
also installed two short chrome tips to extend the exhaust just
past the tag mounting area. It looks great, and, the sound is
terrific! Grand total - about $75.00.–
