[E-Type] Grumble

OK everybody, show of hands…
Raise your hand if you ever took the cap off the distributer, worked on it, put the cap back on and couldn’t start it because you left the rotor off.

Ahhhhh, yes.
Now I feel better.
Excuse me, I have to go back out to the garage now.

Never left the rotor off, but it usually takes me two attempts to
get the insulators in the right order whenever I fit new points.

I personally think he should go to the head of this very large class.
While that error is more obvious it is no less frustrating since a new
cap is now in order (or is that on order?).

Does coming off ‘ramps’ and hitting the bottom of your car count? I
jacked the car up to get them under the rear tires, didn’t want to go
through the hassle of using the jack to take it down so measured the
clearance, with an inch or so to spare just didn’t count on it
bouncing a bit as it rolled down to the floor. OUCH! ;-(

I started my 260Z once to set the carbs by reaching through the drivers
window. Damned thing was in reverse and dragged me into the street
before I could shut the key off.

Still got the scars on my left knee to remind me. ;-(

…that’s gotta be one of the most painful things I’ve heard!!
I was helping a friend rebuild an engine one time, Ford v-8, when we got the intake manifold on, ready to drop the carb on, he dropped a lock washer down the manifold hole.
Ended up having to pull a head (we guessed the right one though). But still not as bad as finding a slinger ring…

Lloyd,
You must not have eaten your AB soup!!! Don’t recall having done that but have placed the wire for the points at the wrong side of the insulator.

In reply to a message from soothsayer1@comcast.net sent Wed 5 Apr 2006:

Talking of cock-ups…

I was riding home once from university on my newly-built 650
Triumph Tiger. Doing a 160 mile fully-laden trip as your shakedown
run is not advised BTW, but I was only 19.

Anyway the thing wasn’t happy so I stopped on a small gravel pull-
over just before a bend along the two-lane winding A49 near
Hereford if anyone knows it, with big wagons lumbering past every
few seconds…

Took the carb top off, pulled out the slide, adjusted the needle
and replaced carb top, not realising I had trapped the cable
slightly and the throttle was now about 1/3 way open…

Big tall bike, student luggage tied to the tank and the back of the
seat, small gap for me to climb on and perch between the two
bundles. So I reach over to the left side, grope for the
innaccessible switch and jump on the kickstart. The bike bursts
into life and immediately reaches top revs in neutral. Five seconds
of this and my tight rebuild will probably seize or spit expensive
parts out of the crankcase, so I pull the clutch in and stomp into
second gear to stall it.

Of course it doesn’t stall and I have no option but to jump on
board side-saddle and fly out into the road with no time to check
for trucks… Lord be praised we do the mother of all drag starts,
around a sharp bend for good measure, but miss traffic and I manage
to retain control enough to climb over into a proper seating
position and reach down for the ignition switch behind my left knee.

Don’t think my heart has ever beaten so fast since… And now I
always snap the throttle open and shut after any carb work on any
vehicle before starting it up.–

David, that’s just the South American contingency. And as I recall, drinking it was the only way to get out of the club.
