Subject: [E-Type] Series 1 Heater Blower Motor

A few weeks back someone posted a Grainger part number and phone number
for a replacement heater blower motor that fits a series I car. Mine just
went out. I had one in the spare parts bin that didn’t fit. Would someone
please post this information again? Thanks.>

I had seen pictures on here a while back showing someone who
swapped out their duct fan with a fan that came off of some
sort of GM car.

I’m referring to the fan that sits on the left hand side of
the car by the brake and clutch reservoirs; this thing is
supposed to blow cool or hot air across a little radiator
into the cabin of the car.

Anyone know what this motor was, and what mods were made to
get it to fit up? Our motor’s toast, and my dad and I are
debating whether to attempt a motor rebuild (provided we can
find replacement brushes for the motor, etc) or to try
replacing it with something else.

Anyone have any suggestions?–

Those fan motors are very common in British cars, but all slightly
different, I think - I replaced mine with one from a scrap Reliant
Scimitar, if I recall, and although the motor body was slightly
longer (making the battery a pig to fit) everything else was
identical. Having said that, because the basic motor is so common,
you should be able to get brushes and bearings for it quite easily,
if that’s all it needs.–

I just took my old brushes to an auto place and bought the
nearest size. 2 minutes with a file and they fitted fine.
Bushes will be more of a problem.
Although working perfectly it still didn’t shift enough air
to keep my toes warm so I replaced it with a new motor a
friend kindly brought back from the US. I’m sure someone
else will give you a part no. and supplier.
Simple to fit but on a crude before-and-after test it was
better, but only slightly. Certainly not worth replacing a
good original motor with.
My view is that the fan cage is the limiting factor and if
your goal is to shift a lot more air that’s the way to go.
Can’t remember who did that replacement, just that they came
from a colder country than mine which I guess was the
motivation.–

Sprzout,
Yes, I believe it was a Pontiac Fiero heater fan. If you do a archive search
you’ll surely find it. Also perhaps a better solution is a new motor from WW
Grainger (I think). A search on heater fan will surely turn up both solutions.

IIRC a Fiero was used as the donor,as I recall they were able to use
the motor/fan with a small amount of trimming on the bottom of the
heater box.

Or just try this approach: http://www.e-type-lovers.com/heater.htm

About $25. It’s what I have on my OTS and it blows plenty of air.

In reply to a message from George Cohn sent Wed 16 Mar 2005:

Thanks, guys!!!

This is going to be a big help, since the original motor
doesn’t even want to spin (I’m thinking something inside the
motor broke and lodged itself against the inside of the
casing or something) and we need to get some way to blow
some air through the cabin, since the S235 blower/air
conditioning is something of a pain with manual windows (for
those not familiar with the joke, S235 air conditioning is 2
side windows down going 35 mph)

And since my uncle has some sort of wholesaler account with
Grainger, we can get the part fairly cheaply. :)–

Hi Walter,
I am restoring a 66 e type FHC to original and was able to secure an original heater fan motor from another forum member from a 69 2+2. The motor turns but not freely. I am attempting to take it apart to repair but can only get it to slide open about an inch. From your note it sounds like you may have knowledge of how I can disassemble and fix. Could you provide any tips or direction ? Thanks in advance !
Jay
