[E-Type] Help with strange brake problem

Took the car out for a freeway spin today. All was normal
and fine and then as I pulled off the freeway suddenly my
brake went limp. When depressed the pedal went 2/3 of the
way to the floor before engaging the brakes. Brake effort
was moderate, more than the usual amount of pressure was
needed but the car did stop without drama. The travel of the
pedal was alarming to say the least. I parked for about 30
minutes and resumed my drive and the brake pedal travel
became normal again (for my car about 20% before engaging),
but I did have to lightly pump the pedal twice to get good
pressure. It was fine for another 20 minutes home but felt
very light again by the time I pulled into the driveway.
No brake fluid leaks anywhere that I can find. What am I
experiencing here?
Thanks

What model e-type do you have? Sounds like a bad master cylinder,
especially if you have an early series I.

Randy:

Any loss of fluid from your brake fluid resevoirs? If so, it could
possibly be your servo unit. With a faulty servo, fluid can make
its way into the servo canister and will not appear as an external
leak.

Randy,
I’m afraid that pretty much has to be a fault in the servo
master cylinder…–

What a coincidence-maybe something in the air. I had a similar
problem. Pedal traveled a long way the first time I hit the
brake. It scared me so much that I thought I hit the wrong pedal,
so I lifted my foot, and pressed again, and it was fine. Quickly
discovered that I had to ‘‘pump twice’’ whenever I wanted to brake
normally. This continued for the balance of my ride, although I
had driven the car over two hours in a stretch the week before
without incident, and in fact had driven probably 20 minutes prior
to this happening. I have no visible leaks either, and the brake
fluid bottle is full.–

An update: Took the car out this morning for about 20 minutes, the
brakes performed flawlessly.–
